We will be moving this summer and I have several clumps of trillium (native and purchased that I want to take with me. Anyone know what the best way to do this is?
Trllium
Carefully ^_^
I would dig the clumps, keeping the soil intact around the roots. Replant as soon as possible.
They should be fine, trills stay close to the surface and should be easily found. I too, have received them through the mail, basicly sent... using the second method
1) leave them in soil...but be sure to mist to keep soil slightly damp...........if you have many....LOL you could end up with a trunk or truck covered with clumps of trill filled dirt.
You could use a pail and layer them as you find them~~couple inches of dirt, trills...more dirt, trills and so on....the pail would help in keeping them cooler and moist.
or
you can lift them, keep them in a plastic bag with some moist paper/paper toweling ~~ but I would not leave them in the bag for more than 5 days to a week.....you don't want them to produce mold.
store in the shade or refrigerator.....replant A.S.A.P.
They should be fine, trills stay close to the surface and should be easily found.
Not always. I suspect it depends on the species and type of soil. I've heard of them going down as much as a foot, but I'm sure that's the exception and not the rule.
Of course, don't be surprised if the go dormant soon after transplanting, and some trilliums can skip a year of growth, just as martagons might.
