What am I?

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

A month or so ago I planted some seed from a trade packet marked "Salad Burnett", and this is what I got...

Salad Burnett is a herb. Google "Salad Burnett" & get lots of information. Pictures don't resemble yours though!

Looks like carrots or poison hemlock. What does it smell like? Don't get it on you, just see what it smells like.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

looks like carrots. How big were the seeds?

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Duh - I already researched Salad Burnet - that's why I'm asking!!! Didn't even vaguely resemble what I was expecting or what I saw pictured!

Poison hemlock doesn't sound good, but I'm still standing, so I'm guessing that's not it.

Hmmmm...the seeds were awfully small - alas it was a month ago, so I can't say if they resemble my other carrot seeds. Guess I'll root around in the grow box and see if there's a sign of underground life.

Thanks for the info... Poison hemlock in a trade? Makes me wonder who I pissed off!

The seeds were

Whatever it is you may want to check who you got it from. I never thought about a screw up in a trade or that it could be dangerous. I still think its carrots. How are the tomato seeds I sent you doing? They were tomato seeds.

You should smell the leaves. If they smell like carrots, it's carrots. If they smell musty or like a mouse, it's poison hemlock. If it has no smell, it could be one of a number of relatives.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I will do that in the am... good idea!

Looks like carrots or chervil to me.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

By Jove, I think you've got it! There were 2 other herbs in my trade pack - chervil and epazote. So far nothing has germinated in the Chervil pot, but I will be very interested to see what pops up in there!!!

I will do the "sniff thaing" in the morning, as well!

What do I win?!? I would be surprised though I am not very good at guessing these things correctly.

Turns out to be the Boobie-Prize! Carrot it is! There are 3 "big" ones, and 2-3 babies coming in. I wonder what they will be when they grow up. Since there were no carrots in our trade, this totally intrigues me!

Thanks to all!!!

paracelsus- what does a mouse smell like????????

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh, Jen - how funny! I thought that briefly, but I was caught up thinking - OMG did a fellow DGer really send me poison hemlock under the guise of something edible. What the H*** did I do to her???

Elmira, NY(Zone 6a)

If you've ever had mice in your house or visited a pet shop with mice for sale, you know exactly what mice smell like. Musty. It's a very distinctive smell. Not a good one.

Bark River, MI

Well thank goodness it isn't poison hemlock! Paracelsus, I'm almost afraid to ask -- but why did that come to mind?

Elmira, NY(Zone 6a)

You mean, why did I think of poison hemlock? Because it looks a lot like carrot/Queen Anne's lace. Most people who get sick from eating poison hemlock thought they were eating wild carrot.

Danbury, CT(Zone 6a)

Hmmm, never notice the smell of a mouse. I guess that scent is how my kitties track them down.

Saluda, SC(Zone 8a)

jenhillphoto, mice have a very distinct odor. Before I lost my sense of smell, I could tell every fall when we began to have mice come into our old house from outside. No body else was able to detect their presence, but I would set traps and in a couple of days the problem was gone. (It's just a part of living in the country--exterminators are animals and traps we set)

Those are DEFINITELY carrots....

Elmira, NY(Zone 6a)

Yeah, mice have a very distinctive smell indeed. Just walk into a pet shop that has mice one of these days, and you will smell and remember.
