When is a good time for Middle Arkansas to plant their potatoes for the second crop? anybody know?
i'd like to get a few varieties on line for fall planting, my husband said october, I think that's way too late.
best time to plantpotatoes the second time
This is going to depend a lot on the variety of potato, whether it's short-day or long-day, how long it takes to maturity.
ok, I was going to try the fingerlings and maybe a red pontiac or some other red. nothing purple that I just don't think I could eat a purple potato LOL
I'm growing Purple Viking. It's got a purple skin, but the inside is white like a normal potato.
No, there are some that have purple or blue flesh.
K_A,
I'm growing red fingers, kennebecs, yukons, and purple vikings. The red fingers were planted Feb. 14th and harvested this past Saturday morning. They were 103 days. Grew them in old washing machine tubs and SmartPots (20 gallon).
I'm hoping to plant a fall crop, too. I'll go with a 90-100 day variety and plant the seeds mid to late August for a harvest by Thanksgiving.
Of course, I'll be praying there are no early freezes before Thanksgiving!
Please lmk what variety you decide to go with. Thanks!
Linda
Thanks so much Linda, growing in tubs? I nver thought about that. I got some tractor tires out back, I bet I could grow a bunch in there. and just turn the tire over with a tractor and get them out easy enough. so where do ya'll get your seed potatos at?
I ordered mine from Ronninger's this year. I think our plant out date for fall potatoes is mid/end July to middle August. That's going strictly from my memory and it's not very reliable right now. :)
linda, where do you get your red fingers and kennebecs at
Thanks Stephanie.
