Another School Bus Wreck

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I almost killed 4 teenagers in a pickup!!. I took invasive action to the left lane to keep from hitting them broadside. The 16 year old boy was driving out of a Mc Donalds driveway and was gonna across a 6 lane highway to prove to his friends who egged him on to do it..His mom and dad was inside Mc Donalds just watching him leave out the driveway and also watched my big yellow school bus plow right into him.
My right corner of my school bus hit his driver side front fender and part of the door and THANK GOD!! I didn't kill them..I could have T-boned them between my bus and 2 lightpoles if I had stayed in that lane I was traveling in. His parents came out and was just a fussing at him and making sure the kids were ok. She approached me and told me..She was so sorry for her son to pull out of the driveway and getting in my way.. I told the lady..you are one lucky mom to have your son still alive!! and plus those other 3 kids..
Her son finally calmed down and told me that he was so sorry for what he did..and he wound up hugging me to death!!! I asked him..Didnt your mom just tell you not to cross that 6 lane highway!!! and didn't your dad tell you to go around the back side of Mc Donalds!!! (his parents told me ahead of time what they had told him to do)..lol..He was so scared and was just about start crying..I told him..YOU should have listen to your parents!!!
Those other 3 kids which I have no idea if they felt remorse for what they done. Who knows but I do know that kid will live this in his mind over and over watching that big yellow dog coming straight at him..
I am fine but got few bruises from that seat belt which locked me in position as I was standing with both feet on my brakes! Skid marks showed that I braked 27 feet before I hit the truck going at 40 miles an hour...and the police thought I did a darn good job stopping a 40 foot 1 ton bus.. I had tires smoking too...LOL...

Nadine,
Thank God you are alright. If he were my son, he wouldn't be driving for another year and NO MORE FRIENDS IN THE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boys are such daredevils sometimes. Stay Safe. Tina

I thought Texas had passed a law about how many teens could be in a car at one time with a teen driver???? Was that just a Houston law? It's a darn good one in any case, for just the reasons you cited: a bunch of teens egging on another teen who feels he has to "show everyone he's not a chicken" by pulling some stupid stunt like that one. They're lucky they're all able to walk away from that accident. If I were the driver's parent, he'd not be driving for a LONG time.

Glad you are okay, other than a few bruises.

I am not sure if it is the law in this small town of Liberty,Texas. The family and friends are from Humble area..

Good driving!

Sounds like he got some sense into his teenaged head. Hopefully he will share with the other kids at school.

That kid obviously isn't mature enough to be behind the wheel! I sure hope his parents took away his keys for a long time!

Nadine, I am so glad that you and the boys are okay! I hope this lesson will stay with all of them for a lifetime!

nadine.. thank goodness yours and the boys angels were on overtime that day.. I swear something just shuts down in teenagers brains when they get behind the wheel of a car..just because a teen ager is legally old enough to drive doesnt mean hes responsible enough to be allowed.. to many arent..
glad to see noone was hurt and your swift actions saved everyone
heal quickly..

I am coming to Liberty to drive a lead car for your bus. I'll put a cattle pusher on the front of it, like the old trains had. LOL, watch out teenagers!

I am glad you are not alone this weekend. I would have a huge case of the willies if it had happened to me.

Ginger is getting bigger and fits right in around here. Friend to all, foe to none (except one mean old cat)

Nadine so glad to hear you are okay
And to the person that asked about how many teens in a car yes it did pass and it is not just for the state of Texas

As we all know teens do not always think nor listen to their parents of anyone else
I am glad they are okay but most importantly a fellow bus driver is okay!!!

Thank you for the wonderful comments! I have been a bus driver for 10 years now and will still keep driving..mmm..a cattle pusher...snow pusher..whatever they are called...I need one!! one that wraps around my whole bus!! We were gonna have a school bus popicle n sweets party in my bus Tuesday after school..don't think it will happen now..My kids don't even know what happened yet..sigh...

Hi Nadine,
Glad you are O.K. Boy, some things just scare the wee-wee out of you, don't they? I always wished I had a cow catcher on the front of my bus! The way they are shaped, they were meant to push cattle ( or other obstructions) out of the way.

Yup, Ya got that right!
