I heard someone talking about his friend's horse that is white with black spots (not Appaloosa or paint/pinto, but like a Dalmation). He wasn't sure if it's a mixed breed or what it is; is there such a breed with marking like that?
Horse breed question
Sounds like a Leopard Appy.. :) I love em!!!

Thanks ZZ....got the same answer on FB :-) They are cool looking horses!
Yes and very sure footed in the mountains. They are closely related to the Mustang but are not as long winded. The Nez Perce loved this breed and helped to develop it.
leopard appaloosas are so pretty! that was what pippi longstocking had... when i was little, i called them pippi longstocking horses and everyone but me and my mom were confused! but, it was certainly not the first time nor the last for that sort of situation.
Thanks for the link ZZ's What a gorgeous horse, I had never heard of them before. Didn't you say at one point you were into horses?? Great Pic's...Hay
I was a cowgirl my entire young life. Until 1989 when I was kicked and broke my arm in 5 places with some internal injuries. I never got over it emotionally.. I saw it happen like a million times. The worst pain I've ever had. I miss the horses. :)
I can't think of any animal that compares with a horse, they are so majestic, mysterious, curious, and powerful. I always loved riding even though I must admit I wished I'd spent more time with them. That must have been very painful, and even so I bet you miss them terribly. Hay.
I love horses. Hay, did you check out that site I write for? I put up some pics from my trip.
Right around the same time I got hurt, a guy I worked with got kicked by a yearling filly and she put her foot clear through his stomach out his back. He was in the hospital for 6 months! He nearly died..
They are very dangerous.. it's usually human mistake. The horse that kicked me took aim and came up with both hind legs.. He meant it.. which is rare.. Funny, his name was Spanish Pistol.
I've had times with my horses that were the best times of my life. :) I'd LOVE to have a nice old horse that I could trust.
I am blessed to have several but you cannever forget that they are bigger than us and they play rough.
The hardest I ever laughed in my entire life was the first time I took my horse swimming at the lake. I will never forget floating in the water with just my nose and mouth on the surface of the water trying to keep from drowning from laughing soooo hard while my horse was swimming to the other side.. When he got out, he turned around and called to me sooo loud! I swear he was laughing too!
There was one thing I learned when I was a kid, a wise old man said to me when I went to his house to ask if I could ride his horse. With a gruffer than usual voice he said "Kid I'll let you ride my horse on one condition, You just remember that my ole horse will teach you more than you'll ever teach him." I never forgot that, and I think the longer I live the truer that has become at least to me.
Cajun I just checked out the site, and was about to return but could not access the link you sent me, as Cubits is now shut down. Could you send me that link again. Pleeez.
I'll have to get it from Elena and get back to you.
That is one great story ZZ's I can almost see that as you tell it. I can just listen to you and feel the love you still have for horses inspite of a terrible experience. You must have been very passionate for them at one point. I have always had a passion for horses. I will watch any movies that has horses, go to any rodeo, or gymkana, to watch them jperform. AND don't dismount your mount around me or your mount won't be there when you return...Hay.
I love this thread! Wow.. would you look at that baby!! Yeowza!
I had an appy mare give me a baby that color.. I was only 14 years old.. I named her Venus. My mom bought me that mare and we didn't know she was pregnant. (I guess it had something to do with us kids letting Davy Crockett out at night so he wouldn't be alone) LOL I worked at a rent stable.. at night we would play tag on the horses with no halters/bridles.. in a small pasture with 30 ponies! The next year it was 60 ponies.. Yeah Davy!!
I don't have the land for a horse, but think about it often.. I miss the companionship of such an awesome animal.
lolol... Horses and Chicken Heads
Love that spotted baby. We have 2 spotted horses. One is red and white, the other is blue and white.
Blue as in blue roan?
Yes.
I would love to have another horse! I don't have the time to devote to one as I work so much. Semi-retirement is looking better and better. I think I would like a Highland Pony. I've done some research and I think that might be the thing for me. So five years from now, look out! I'll be riding again!
I am not familiar with those.
Oh, well CajuninKy, I should start by saying that I grew up showing Arabians and my favorite was a pretty lively fellow. So I was looking for a breed with a good gait and a bit of a spark (if you know what I mean) but also a breed that would be able to pasture well and adapt to my area. An easy keeper. I don't need a tall horse. 14 - 14/2 hands is ideal for me. Tough and doesn't need to be shod really, just trimmed is fine. I ride english usually, so a nice bouncy trot would be good. I have been searching internet sites and asking around. Someone suggested that a Highland Pony would be really good for me if I could find one. So I casually researched those a bit as I am in no hurry to find a horse. Then I saw the breed featured on a show on RFD TV and thought that it would, indeed, be a very good fit for me if I could find one. Maybe in five years. Someday.......=~)
I don't do bouncy trots. LOL We are easy gaited fans.
=D. Well, you go with what you grew up with generally. I actually learned to ride on Saddlebred ponies. I'm not sure if bouncy is really the term I want. A similar trot cadance to the two would be good.
I grew up riding WTC. Mostly appys and QHs. When i moved up here I was introduced to the world of "gaited" and I will never go back. We trail ride and I can go all day on an easy gaited horse. Not so anymore on a WTC. Give me a rack over a trot any day. Like riding an easy chair on the trail.
My dad kept one of my Saddlebred ponies when I fell in love with Arabians. She was 5-gaited and he rode her for years out on the trails and accross the corn fields. The slow gait would be his preference as well. I still wouldn't mind an Arabian, but the ones I've seen lately are all legs and tail.
Hey all... LOL horse talk in the poultry forum... BTW this weekend I will be looking at a new horse for ME... quarter cutting horse.... WHOO HOOO
Just thought I would break the rules..
Coooool! Post photos if you get it.
I don't really hang out on the horse forum as I would start wanting a horse so badly and that is not on schedule for a few years. But I still miss the horse people as much as I miss having a horse, so if you want to break the rules every now and then that is fine with me =)!
MissJestr was it you that had the horse sold or given away without your permission? If so did you ever get it back?
No I did not, I like to dream that Jes is making someone else as happy as she made me...
Then I will dream the same dream with you.
Another spotted horse breed - Knabstrup horse
That's the one I was thinking of. Saw a pic of one when I was little and have never forgotten it but I don't know anything about them.
Spotted saddle horses are nice, gaited and more available, but their 'spots' are large
I like mustangs, and have a Sulphur mustang mare. You can get some gorgeous mustangs from the BLM for $125.00. This is my Sweet Sulphurs Sassy Lassy She's also considered a Spanish mustang - you can see some of the characteristics - bi-colored mane and tail, striped legs. She's what's call a zebra dun
That is a beautiful color. And what a well cared for coat. She is lovely, allgr8dogs!
Nice horse. Does she ride well? I went to a BLM auction once when I lived in La. By the time the horses got there they must have been picked through at other places because there were no promising ones left. All bays and scruffy. I have looked at web sites of mustangs up for adoption out west and there are nice ones. There was one site where they had gathered from a particular herd and nearly all of them were grullas. Beautiful horses.
