Hello,
My asparagus are growing great, second year now, so looking forward to a nice harvest next year.
I was thinking of mulching with straw, is that ok for asparagus or will it be too much moisture for them? The bed does drain well, the soil/compost shrunk some from last year, so I thought the straw would also add to organic matter over time ( in addition to compost top dressing).
thank you,
Yara
Asparagus - mulching?
I think that it would be fine to mulch with straw. I've mulched with half composted leaves before with good results. Probably should have done that this year as I have tons of weeds.
I've always mulched with hay or straw and had no problems with too much moisture retention. Asparagus did great.
Ditto on straw for the asparagus. I love using straw for mulch in general. I always have an extra bale (I do straw bale gardening primarily for tomatoes) sitting in the veggie garden to use when needed for mulch. It sits and breaks down as it gets rained on. I also use the broken down straw from the tomatoes in the fall or the next spring. There is no more wonderful compost than that!
