I've been told this is a Bromeliad. I am hoping to get an exact name for my MIL. She brought this back from her sister and mother's funeral in OK. I told her I'd find out for her.

It's one of very many Guzmania hybrids. The Europeans have made these crosses into super-long-lasting color machines. You see them all over airports and hotel lobbies because the colors last for months. Take a look at www.bsi.org (Photo Index -->Guzmania-->Cultivars) and you'll probably see something similar.
