Snake ID PLEASE

San Angelo, TX(Zone 7b)

My boys, 5 & 3, found this under their basketball goal. I'm thinking it's a garden snake. It was about a 1 1/2 ft long.

It scares me when they find things like that. This is their 3rd or 4th snake they've found :o

Thanks a bunch

I believe what you have is a ribbon snake. They are not venomous. If I had to make a best guess as to the specific type, I'd say the Peninsula Ribbon Snake. They are described as 18 to 25 inches in length, tan or brown in color with a narrow light stripe on each side with a plain yellowish white belly.

It looks like a Checkered Garter snake but I cant be 100 percent. They are all over my yard and I had many as pets growing up.

Common garter snake.

The one thing I do recall is that they poop all over you when you pick them up.

San Angelo, TX(Zone 7b)

I'm gonna go look up the snake.

jujubetexas- It pooped all over my husband when he picked it up. After I put it in a container, it peepeed all in the container.

Memories.......

I think it is a checkered garter snake. The ribbon snakes don't have the spots like garter snakes do.
I knew it wasn't venomous b/c of the eyes. Its head looked like it was swooped, almost like it was made to dig.

At any rate, venomous or not, it's still scary when they (kids) come in and scream, "I found a snake!"
I used to have a corn and king snake as a child. I also hatched 3 rat snakes from eggs as a kid. I grew up in AL, I'm scared of rattlers here!

Snakes are our friends.

WOW that's a BIG snake

Friends who make your skin crawl are mere aquaintances in my book! That snake would definitely need one of those bicycle flags on the end of this tail to get to stay in my garden.

As long as they aren't venemous or don't bite me they can stay. Having said that, even non-venomous snake will bite if you mess with them, so one that size would be left alone!

LOL! A non-venemous snake can stay in my garden--assuming that it could avoid the dogs and the chickens--as long as I know where it is. Thus the desire to outfit a snake with the bicycle flag!

Arlington, TX

I found rough earth snakes this year, too small to bite and they eat earthworms so not much use against pests. Still, they are interesting to find when I go out to weed.

We had large five foot rat snakes that used to eat our chicken eggs right out underneath the chicken. They used to get stuck going back out the coop because the egg was too big to get out the fence in their stomach. I would take them on a ride down the road and release them.

Snakes are neat but SCAREY!

not so scary if they aren't going to kill me...

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

I agree with you Terry......about the bicycle flag! LOL!!!!!

My daughter and I found a similar looking snake in our small pond in the back corner of the garden last year. We estimated it to be around 2-3 ft long and pretty good size around. She screamed so loud that it left and has never come back! She asks often if I have seen it......but thank goodness I have not!

I look carefully when I am out in the yard for them. We have woods about two blocks from here so we occasionally get critters from time to time even tho we are in the city!

I understand that snakes and spiders help in nature, but I too would rather just be an "acquaintance!" LOL!

You can get an infection from a bite of a non-poisonous snake. I think, I would be careful when handling one that size.

Here is a picture of a ribbon snake for future reference. It was in my flower bed literally on top of a flower.

kenboy- Is that a corn snake?

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

It is a Texas Rat. I set my peafowl egg under chickens and check them just after sundown, sometimes I find snakes and have to relocate them.

San Angelo, TX(Zone 7b)

In Al as a kid, I hatched 3 rat snakes from eggs. We used to go to the college and get pinkies to feed them. I had a corn and king snake also. But that was when I was a child, I'm grown now and have watched too much TV.
That's a big one. You still have it?

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

OH no, I set it free a few miles from us, near a dairy. About ten years ago we had several pythons and boas. Then one year we had such a hot Summer that one day it got to 117 behind the barn and our rats just shut down and would not breed. It started costing us $25 a week to feed them so we found them good homes. I really don't miss them but I do miss my horses.

I LOVE horses!! What happened to your horses?

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, kenboy is showing off his snakes again, I see! LOL

Ken made the decision to find new homes for the remaining 2 horses a few years ago. He realized that if he was injured while riding we would be up that old creek without a paddle - as in no income!

We sure do miss them sometimes (the horses) - the snakes, not so much :~)

San Angelo, TX(Zone 7b)

I think the risk is worth it! But then again I don't have a horse. Were the horses scared of the snakes?

Kids are funny that way aren’t they as they are little not mush scars us but when we get older and parents have whipped the tar out of us for doing silly things some of us still do dangerous things but learned how to do them safer. lol
