Buffy to Buffster

Well, the chicken run is finally done!!! I still need to fill in the edges a bit with dirt, but it is secure now, so my girls can go out and graze. Speaking of GIRLS, one of the first chickens I "sexed" was Buffy. She is a Buff Light Brahma Bantam. Her neck feathers were scalloped, so I was certain she was a girl. Well...this morning I was opening the coop and run and Rooster had started crowing. I came back into the barn and heard crowing outside in the run. I said (as I always do), "I KNOW, Rooster, I know...!" And that's when I saw that Rooster was still roosting in the coop, not outside. I figured one of the Buff Orpingtons had finally figured out how to crow. But all of them were inside the coop as well. So, it's obvious where I'm going, but while I was standing there, Buffy let out a big crow! So Buffy is now Buffster. LOL

I have no doubt that Buffy is Buffster....but I currently have two Dutch Bantam hens, who when they are not brooding or laying, stand out on the edge of the raised bed every morning and crow their little hearts out.

The first time I heard it I freaked, thinking that one of my illegal roos had matured very early...but no. I have now seen both Bianca and Sheba do it. They stand on their tip toes, fluff out their hackles, stretch out their necks and CROW. It is a bit deeper than a bantam rooster's, but it is definitley a crow.

Sorry but Bufster sure looks like a Buffy to me. I don't think I'd change her name just yet, but thats just my opinion...Hay.

If Buffy is a rooster, I have a lot of roosters!

The clever rooster will look like a pullet for as long as hormonally possible....

LOL - well, her crow is considerably lower pitched than Rooster's. She's a bit bigger than him too. Maybe she is a girl - a tomboy? Or would she have to be a turkey to be a tomboy? (groan) We shall see. If she crows while she pops out an egg, I guess I'll know for sure. :)

Here's Rooster - he's quite a svelte little guy.
