Ok we all know the Temptations wonderful song My Girl
" When it's cold outside, I got the month of May"
Did I miss something somewhere? Where did May go?
It hasent past cuz this is not July and I know April is over but this is NOT May.
I can't get out and plant my seedlings that are ready and I am a little worried about some of my Veggies I have out already. OMG its hailing outside.....will my plants be ok, it's not freezing temp but I live in SE multnomah county oregon and we do get a freezing east wind through here
Where oh where did my May go...
We are getting this weather too. I have a few seedling that need to go out soon or into bigger pots. Next week is suppose to be more of the same up here. On the other hand, all my rhodies are doing well and lasting much longer than usual. It's odd to have so many things blooming altoghther. I do know that after the full moon on the 27th it should get warmer. Hang in there we are all feeling it.
Full moon on my birthday....Great I love the full moon
I live on a north facing slope in the foothills of the Cascades. It isn't warm here until it's been warm elsewhere for awhile. So I'm with you. Need some heat here . . .
Well at least it didn't rain today!
Well, you know in an El Nino year apparently we DO send your rain your way. But the rain should be gone by now - and it certainly shouldn't be snow!!
Love the name of your town - Grizzly Flats. That would make a person think twice about what to pack when visiting.
Well I guess it could always be worse, Evelyn I am sorry you have been getting snow but you have made me count my blessings lol.
Pretty picture of the snow. Brrrrrr
I'm sure you didn't deserve that mess in May. Geeesh.
Usually our last snowfall is in late march, then drying...then hot until November, though sometimes milder weather until the heat settles in. Nothing is settled! I don't mind sharing the sunshine, but please take this "weather" away. It's OK to snow in the wintertime, but not now for C****'ssake!
I am glad I was late with the cool weather veggies, as I grew all mine own from seed this year. The lettuce loves this weather, as do the peas, beets, carrots, and broccoli. Usually I have them from fall on, but this year I have been digging out my "Square Foot Gardens" as they were full of clay and weed roots, as well as some over-wintering plants. I dug them to their bottoms...only 12", and then sifted them out...then put in peat, vermiculite and perlite to lighten the clay. Then added some organic things like greensand, blood meal, bone meal, rock phosphate...
SFG #1 - carrots & peas
SFG #2 - basil from seed (for pesto-loving hubby)
SFG #3 - purple bush beans, carrots, beets
SFG #4 - overwintered stevia, beets, broccoli, potatoes
SFG #5 - tomatoes, carrots, parsley
SFG #6 - tomatoes - then more storms did not get any further than that. I have 2 more that I cleared out most of the weeds, only
SFG #7 - has some plants still in there and
SFG #8 - still has overwintered glads and dahlias that did not get into their gardens last season. (They too were filled with clover and other various weeds, which protected them from the cold.)
Nice garden beds. Is Grizzly Flats in the mountains?
Yep, you guessed it! Actually, GF is above us..about 5 miles higher up as we are in between GF and Somerset. GF is at 4000' elevation, we are at about 3500'. We are 20 miles outside of the nearest town, which is Placerville.
It rained all day, well after a sunny morning, then it did. I ran to take out the trash, did not put on a jacket and got soaked. I did not realize it was raining so hard.
The calm before the storm....
Nice, organized garden - I can see the potential plants there.
you live in a beautiful place. It must make up for the bad weather from time to time. I love the PNW you still get a lot of natural beauty. Here in Portland you have a city in the woods its great. I was born in Bend Oregon but I lived most of my life in Long Beach CA. As soon as my oldest boy started school we moved back to Oregon and I would never consider leaving. My kids can go climb trees and play in the woods......Not stay at home inside playing video games all the time.
We even have several frog ponds within a mile of my home
I love the PNW also but for some reason the 'feeling' and 'looks' of CA get to me. The mountains and desert especially.
I go back to visit my husbands family a few times a year, It does have beautiful places like the high desert with trees that you cannot fine anywhere else like the joshua tree. And the national forrest and wonderful.......if you can plan a long time in advanced and you have to pay to visit. Camping on a whim....forget it you have to reserve your spot like a year in advanced. and if you live in SoCal your looking at a concrete jungle. The Los Angeles river is acutally just a concrete sewer and water runoff basin, you cant swim or fish or anything in it. Its a man made river....we actually a man changed river because the LA river use to be a river before they tried to re rout it with concrete it just dried up. Now its just an overflow basin
Yes I agree with you. I spent time down there in '56 and '57, San Bernadino was a small town. I was in Victorville and I loved it. I also love Palm Springs.
palm springs was our getaway place when we lived there its swiming weather all the time
GC and Ww ~ I have lived in CA for all but a few months in El Paso, where I was born. Came here on the train...gosh does anyone ever travel by train anymore? I moved "up north" in the fall of 1987 and have been here ever since. It is nice to be out of the city! I have a hs reunion in the fall, so we may go there in SoCA then, in October. I don't care too much about the desert, but my folks loved it. They took me camping once and we slept in sleeping bags under the stars...and that was a WOW for me. I never saw so many stars...and constant "shooting stars"...and the desert is quite beautiful in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom.
Still, I love living in the mountains. I lived in Topanga before I moved here...that was nice, too.
Here is a white lilac. I took the picture on Sunday, after the snow melted....
Wonder if the snow helped your beautiful flower. And I move to form CA to OR by train in 2003 and for lots of my visits. Its my fav way to travel lots of wonderful things to see ans lots of pple to meet. If you can swing for a room on the train all your meals and skacks are free and on weekends there is a wine tasting so what we would normally spend on treats we spend to upgrade to first class and get treats for free.
Very pretty lilac.
I traveled by train from Indiana to San Diego when I was very little and from Indiana to Seattle a few years later. I remember sleeping in the seat and standing on the connecters between cars.
I hear you Gardenchick. We need some sun!
One of my trees the american persimmon is still dormant....I know its alive cuz it's still green under the surface it needs to be warmer before its gonna come alive again for me
Years ago ( in the 40's), when my family lived in south central L.A. , the L.A. river was behind our back yard. I never saw any water in it, just concrete, but I bet there is water in it now...
So now that I have PNW weather, I suppose I can join this forum? My peas are growing fast, and the tomatoes are threatened every day. It's a good thing I bought Serenade for fungus. Has anyone here used it before? When is the best time to apply it?
Cytisus scoparius 'San Francisco'....
Probably before you see fungus. Maybe during dormancy. It should say on the container. Like that cytisus.
Certainly you can join us here. We will just envy all your warmer weather plants. And who knows, in a few years we may be able to grow them.
I was referring to my tomato plants...that is why I got the Serenade. I just put out the plants a few days ago...and now all this rain. I don't want to use it unless I have to. Has anyone used Messenger? Would you think it to be safe on tomatoes?
N cali I think is part of the pnw....its not the southland and your not on the coast to be just west coast maybe you get to chooce where you want to claim and change with your weather :)
Hang on someone will find you and answer your question.
I don't know that Messenger has been shown to be effective on vegetables. It takes a while, doesn't it, to affect their immune systems, so it might be better for shrubs and trees. It's not a pesticide, though, so I think it would be safe.
Or maybe not. Here' somebody who found it to be effective on fruits and vegetables: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/brug/msg0411410710860.html
Please check out the thred called honsety please in the dave garden forum I cannot paste the link or it will get deleted this is super imporntant
Also take the time to read the admin. responce in the same forum

Thanks so much, GardenChick. I've been waiting to hear what the story was and really didn't think that they'd take the time to fill us in. Wow.
Welcome katie I am so sad so many may be leaving :(
I am . . . and I'm not. I believe that those that are leaving are misguided. But I do think they'll be happier if they go and make their statement that way. This is not the only site on the web. And they really, in their heart of hearts, want to be with Dave and Trish on some site anyway. I'm not so sure about why they are still here.

Are you saying that I am a "fair-weather friend" ? ☺
Heh, heh...☺
