There is no forum or thread for it, so here is a new one. I had to share - I sowed these seeds last year and finally rewarded with flowers. Yeah! Black hollyhocks - The Watchman!
Hollyhocks
Beautiful, Lili! I'm just starting but hollyhocks are definitely on my wish list. I remember when I was about 7 and we we lived in Kansas there were bunches growing by the back fence. One of the pleasant memories of childhood. So pretty!
I'll be glad to share seeds with you if there are some. I'm sure there will be. It's at my mailbox but it would look so pretty up against the picket fence. I'm going to have to dig the grass out of that area to plant some hollyhocks and the DH is not going to like it!
Please send pics when you get them on the fence. I'd love to see that. If you get seeds I'd love some. I'm trying to start a cottage garden from scratch and appreciate all the cottage-y seeds I can get. Thanks so much for the offer.
OK. If I forget, just remind me - another month or so I should have seeds.
I wintersowed some black hollyhocks that I got from a swap. They have a couple of sets of true leaves, I may have to wait for next year for blooms. That is alright. I planted the black holly hocks near my tiger lilies in my "tiger garden" - hostas with black and orange flowered plants that tolerate juglone from nearby black walnut trees.
They are biannual.
And didn't I read somewhere that they re-seed like crazy?
yes, but you can probably collect the seeds (and trade).
Oh wow, those are cool. They would be really striking in a mass with white flowers or really pale pink flowers in front of them. Awesome.
It would be pretty in front of a white picket fence. I only have natural wood.
oh, they would be so pretty in front of it. Have you ever grown hollyhocks before. They are very easy to germinate. However, they don't look like much the first year, but this year they just took off and got height to it! I think you need to go ahead and start some this year. I'll dmail you.
Got your Dmail and answered it. No, I have never grown hollyhocks before but I love them! I'm going to plant zinnias in front of the fence too. I have some seeds for some giant ones. Am going to try hardy hibiscus there also. I have four and love them too. Heck! I love about anything that's pink or red! LOL
I love zinnias too. I've been growing them the last 2 years and they are just beautiful. Too bad they are not fragrant.
