strange yellow patches on one of my brugmansias

Newtonville, MA

I'm sort of worried about this sudden mottling on one of my brugmansias. Does it look like a virus? I keep thinking tobacco mosaic virus but I've never really dealt with it so I'm not ready to trash my plant. Help!

Is this on more than one leaf? Any possibility of an overspray from a herbicide?

It's on about 7 leaves and the plant hasn't been near any herbicides. None of my other ones have this. It looks bad, doesn't it? I'm thinking I should destroy it, but that is a depressing thought. If it is a virus, it's a banner year for aphids around here and apparently they're great at spreading viruses. I don't want to infect every other brug I have, but I also don't want to kill it if I've made a hasty diagnosis. Perhaps I should just bring it in the house and watch it for a few months. When it comes to pathogens, I always think the worst.

Do you feed it? Could it be lack of nutrients?

I just had a look at the mosaic virus pictures.

I would take those leaves off and keep the plant away from others.

good luck!

Thanks. It's definitely going into the isolation ward tomorrow. I'll take all the affected leaves off, too. I worry that if it is a virus it might be systemic, though. Why isn't there a Tamiflu for brugmansias?
