This tree is just now winding down its blooming, making it one of the latest spring bloomers. I only see this tree in isolated spots in the area and is usually in clumps or thickets. I thought it was yet another variety of plum but possibly not. Don't recall seeing any fruits but will check again. It is not elderberry and not hawthorn cretaegus.
What is this small tree?
It is Roughleaf Dogwood, Cornus drummondii, I love it.

Thanks very much, Josephine. I'm very glad to hear this. I always thought that there should be at least a few growing around here and now I know of at least 2 spots.
Mine was just identified this week too. I had a garden tour at my house and this was one of the native trees that I kept. Luckily I had an arborist come through on the tour. Thought my area was too alkaline for dogwood, but not this rough leaved one!!
