CLOSED: HAVE: Yellow Morning Glory VINES - ipomoea ochracea

Edinburg, TX

I need to trade away several Yellow Morning Glory vines I started from seed as they are growing fast and twining into anything they can reach!!! They are in two inch peat pots and the main tendril is either close to 12 inches in length or longer than that.

Am looking for any of these plants or trees in return (no bareroot, seeds or cuttings):

Cherry (prunus) any fruit producing species
PawPaw (asimina) any species
American Beauty Berry (calliarpa americana)
Guava (psidium) any species
Balloon Vine aka Love in a Puff (Cardiospermum halicabum)
False Nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica)
Hops (Humulus lupulus)
Black Willow (Salix nigra)
Branches noseburn (Tragia ramosa)
Screwbean Mesquite (Prosopis pubescens) - the type where the seed pods are coiled

these vines can be invasive. not the vine per say but the seeds. In some states they are not allowed. Might want to keep that in mind. I had some at the house here when we moved in, and I am still pulling them every year, that was 12 years ago.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I wish they were invasive for me! I have tried and TRIED to get the seeds to germinate for TWO years and no luck!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

ive tried them too several times and no luck. wondering if they have to be fresh to get to germinate these.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Cat sent me fresh seeds twice - I tried sowing directly in soil/perilite, wet paper towel and baggie, dropping in a glass of peroxide water mix - no luck. I have filed them, not filed them - I have quit trying!

FrillyLily...Maybe you can add that as a comment to the PF entry what your findings are. And also what States they are not allowed in.

It seems to be hard to come by let alone invasive..

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

well shoot wonder what the trick is then.

i would love to have some yellow morning glory.will trade a christmas castus for it. dori

Edinburg, TX

Sorry...no cactus...I don't like cactus :o) Will trade for what I mentioned above.

Frilly...this is a rare Yellow Morning Glory (ipomoea ochracea) species. If you are still pulling them out - offer them up for trade. There are many DG'ers who want this rare yellow variety.

Kay...send you d-mail.

hmm the morning glory vines I have are purple. Maybe they are not the same? I just thought still morning glories, but different color. That is odd.
I know they are listed as an invasive plant in AZ, I remember that one. not sure the other states.

http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=IPOMO

looks like Arkansas as well.

IF it is the same kind of morning glory, I don't know if there are different kinds?

I just know my purple one is a WEED in my yard !

(Zone 7a)

OK..thought so... Ipomoea ochracea is Rare.

Sorry Cat didn't mean to jump this thread with Talk. Thanks for Trade

Edinburg, TX

No problem Kim :o) each posts keeps this active :o)

Frilly - yes the purple growing wild out here too...invasive all over the fences and trees and such. We get a native Alamo vine that has a white bloom and maroon throat - very invasive too.

im gonna try to find seeds and try one more time for the elusive yellow morning glory. maybe ill try the paper towel method. how do you start yours Cat?

Edinburg, TX

I threw the seeds on the ground, stomped them into the soil and left them to their own devices :o)

Okay, for the ones I'm trading - I started them in jiffy pellets them removed the mesh once the secondary leaves showed up and then transplanted them into peat pots.

Cat
Have you ever had yours bloom other than during the winter?

Edinburg, TX

Out here they start blooming around August/September and continue to bloom through May/June.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Cat did you do anything special with the seeds before you placed them in the jiffy pellets?

Edinburg, TX

Just used hot water to soak the pellets so they'd expand. Then placed a seed in each.

Cat

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thanks, Cat! Can't wait to start them. How hot was the water?

Edinburg, TX

Just hot from the faucet...it helps those peat pellets exoand quicker. By the time they swell up they have cooled slightly...just enough to warm up that seed and soften the outer shell. You can just stomp them into the ground as well - have done that too!

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Jeeze Cat, I have had a dickens of a time with these...and I've done all of the above....finally got 2 to germinate out of all those !

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

You folks that got yours to germinate - GOOD ON YOU! I tried different ways of germinating them, but no luck!!!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

That's why I was asking Cat her secret...lol!

Edinburg, TX

You need to quit mollycoddling the seeds :o) i literally throw them on the ground and stomp them into the dirt!! LOL!!! Am going to have to make time to get some seedlings started for trades. If work would only let up!!! I've had to travel out of town just about every other week. Am supposed to have knee surgery near the end of March - maybe then I'll get to stay home for a spell.

Cat

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Cat, I hope your surgery goes well - let us know WHEN and we'll have the prayer warriors all over it!

Keep me in mind for 2 or three vines if you get them up and growing!!!!

Edinburg, TX

Will do - thanks!!!!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

GOD Bless you, Cat!!!
