So, this April I bought a pineapple sage plant from the same herb & flower vendor at the local farmer's market that I buy from every year. The plant is already blooming! And several of the pineapple sage plants still in pots at her market stand last weekend were blooming, too. She has no idea why. Is there some new variety out there that does this on purpose? Or could it have been some weird combination of temperature variations that the plants experienced, maybe while at the original wholesale vendors?
pineapple sage blooming in May?
If I had to guess... it was growing under ideal conditions in a greenhouse. I overwintered mine in a first year GH and when I put it in the ground, it had blooms. They have since dropped and it is putting on new growth but I would say you are correct. The warmth and bright light thru the early season forced the blooms.
That is amazing. I overwinter cuttings under lights, (which get all woody and strange) and the plants still don't bloom until September or so after being set out.
I'd say it's probably the wonder of greenhouse climate control too~ lucky you!
