Middle of May - what is blooming? Lull period in my garden

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Hi - I live in upstate NY, Albany. The hyacinths, crocus, tulips and daffodils and died out (although I got a long run by varying the tulips - emperor, early, late, etc.)

Right now, it's a quiet period - all I have is allium, bearded iris, siberian iris and a few of one other (forget the name, but a pretty spike, light blue).

Upcoming - I have much to come - from lilies to daylilies to dahlias to begonias to hardy hibiscus, callas, cannas, hosta blooms, zinnias, a little bit of everything - but, those are a few months out. I like my garden's slightly crazy disorganization - Over the years, if I find something I like and there is an open area, in it goes - mixing tall, short, colors, textures - but it all works. I have several little patches scattered through the garden to tuck something in for this time of year.

I'd love to know what other NE gardeners have right now - to get some inspiration and ideas for next year. We currently have one of the nicest yards in neighborhood (inner city neighborhood without a lot of variety - mostly impatiens and petunias) so I'd like to up it a notch and find some bright and special colors for this May - June period.

Perennials would be great - a good investment and a fun surprise (I'm often surprised at things that I forgot I planted previous years), but if there are some wild chaotic annuals, that might be fun, also.

Hi Sandra!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Welcome, Sandra!! I can relate to your "empty garden bloom" syndrome. LOL Mine is the same at the moment. All I see is stuff that's going by and stuff that is green but not blooming yet.....except for my trollius and a bit more creeping phlox hanging on, along with my wild violets. Once your garden starts ramping up, please remember to share some pictures with us, either on the "blooms" thread or start your own. It's nice to have you join us!

Welcome Sandra it's nice to have you join us.
I have tall Japanese Primrose blooming, iris's, blue flax, snow-in-summer, Heuchera 'Miracle' is about to bloom, geum, poppies, allium, Azalea 'Mandarin Lights' is budded, and of course the apple tree's are in bloom too.

Wow, Celeste! That's a lot to have in bloom right now! I think you might have brought the Japanese Primrose that is planted in my garage shed garden???? I'm not sure about that, but some kind soul brought one and it has come up but isn't tall yet.

That would be me most likely. Mine are blooming now and so is Jo's.
