Thank you very much for your help. It looks like they are here year 'round. We just moved from a desert meadow environment to the Ponderosa pine forest, I am having so much fun with all the "new" birds! And I agree nanny_56, very cool bird!

Yes! Kool Bird! I would love to see more photo's if you get any. My field guide states that it is a bizarre and scarce woodpecker, which feed's by flying off its perch to catch insects in mid-air.

Yep, Lewis's Woodpecker. This one seems to have discovered suet feeders that aren't in mid-air, though ;-)
