I have 2 purple martin houses. The martins arrived a couple weeks ago. We had a cold snap for a week (rain, cold and windy). I checked the houses Friday for I had not seen any martins for a couple days and there were no nests. Today (Sunday) I saw 2 martins - - will they return?
Will Purple Martins Return?
I think that is something only you can answer by keeping an eye out for them. If they feel safe and there isn't a lot of predators around I can't see why they wouldn't return. Have they nested there in past years? Be sure to let us us know what the outcome is.
thank you for the reply.
Yes, they have nested for many years. I added another house this past fall. I will keep you posted.
I guess the risk is that they died of starvation in the cold, in which case they wouldn't return. But they could have survived by reverse migration some way back south again, in which case they will return.

Resin,
thank you for the hope. I was afraid due to the cold snap they may starve (no flying insects available for them) thus the reason I checked the houses right away. Still crossing my fingers they left to feed and will return.
They returned. They have plenty of insects and are happy. they are funny - - they watch us while we work on the beach or mow the lawn. Life is good! Neighbors are wanting to know where to get the 'houses'.
So glad your martins came back!!
