Close to Fledging

Stafford, VA

There is lots of activity at the bluebird nest box. I saw a few little heads peeking out of the box and mama and papa bluebird were hustling back and forth from the woods to the box with food for their young. Here are a few photos of the activity. Here is papa bird feeding the brood.

And finally, Papa removing a fecal sac from the nest box. By my count they may begin to fledge tomorrow. I am going to try to get a few photos if I can

How exciting to watch this family. Mom and dad look like they're great parents.

Darn!!! Missed the fledge. Between 6:30 last evening and 9:00 AM this morning all 5 of the first brood must have "flown the coop". I really wanted to see them leave as they seemed so anxious during yesterday's activity.

Oh well. They are gone and mom & dad appear to be building a new nest in the back yard nest box. I am going to clean this one out and let it rest until later in the year.

I will have to try for photos of the next fledging.

Those little stinkers! Congrats are in order anyway!

Keep an eye out for them, they are still with momma and poppa, and your yard is their home turf. Today I saw my little fledgies flitting around the new nest box with their parents. The BB pair didn't nest in my yard or my nest box the first time around this spring, but it looks like I will get the second brood. But regardless, the fledglings stay with their parents during a nest move.
