Starting an avocado plant from seed

Specifically, how to do it..any and all tips appreciated!

It is very easy.
Take the seed and wash it well with water. Insert 3 toothpicks into the sides of the seed. Take a glass with water and sit the seed with the pointed end up, the rounded, broader part in the water , say about halfway. In a little time, 1 to 3 month the seed should sprout.
Make sure to maintain the water level.

The first thing to appear is roots, the stem appears soon after. Pot the seedling when the roots are strong and healthy, about 2 to 3 inches long, removing the toothpick and using a good potting mix. Take care to plant the seed in the center of the pot. The top of the seed should be level with the soil surface, water well, then place the plant in a brightly lit location, they need light. Water the pot regularly. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Fertilize once or twice a month during the spring and summer with a houseplant fertilizer.

The avocado is a very large tree. It grows rapidly. They often have to be discarded after 2 or 3 years because they've become too large for indoors. And avocado trees from seeds takes 10 to 20 years to froduce fruits.

MarciaGeiger, Another thing you might like to know is the tree grown from seed will not neccesarily produce the same fruit as the tree it came from. It will be a hybrid and have a high probability of not being a very good fruit and maybe no fruit. That is why all avocado trees planted for fruit production are grafted trees.
