Can anyone help us identify this handsome bird?

Wait for more opinions but it looks like a female Summer Tanager to me.

That's exciting! Or maybe should be worrisome? Our bird guide indicates that a Summer Tanager isn't usually this far north (Cape Cod, Massachusetts). Do some ranges vary so much, or is this part of climate changes?

Hi MB, Range maps can be out dated before they even go into print so... If you haven't already,I would join your states Listserv to see how many actual sightings there are of these birds in recent years.

Here is a link for you. http://www.massbird.org/Features/Massbird.htm

Thanks!! We went there - and found that apparently "first-sightings" of the Summer Tanager have been happening here and on the mainland for several years now! Thanks so much for expanding our horizons on this.

Was reading on another forum, that a run of strong S/SW winds last week has resulted in several species going further north up the American east coast than normal
