We Got CROW!

(Zone 5b)

Butter (EE'er) started crowing yesterday!

I heard him on my way out to feed in the morning, was shocked since that was his very first and he was only one day from being 8 weeks old. His crowing was a a garbled mess but by early afternoon he had it down pat. He hasn't stopped crowing since he discovered his new voice. I swear he's walking around with his head held much now LOL. Butter is VERY roo-ish (a jerk), he performs some very unattractive gorilla chest slams against the wall, fence or the other chickens. I've been a slacker and not done "The HAY Chicken Whisperer Method" on him for a couple weeks. Started it again yesterday, Butter was not happy.

Anyway, for a newbie it was a pretty exciting day. I love the sound of crowing!!

He ought to lose some of the jerk attitude once he comes out on the other side of chicken adolescence. They are so obnoxious when they are "teenage boys" and it sounds like he's in the middle of that stage. Of course, some of them just stay complete jerks forever and annoy the heck out of me (and the hens!)

If you like crowing you'd love it here. I have a game roo on a tie chord in the front yard, a bantam roo, another game roo and an EE roo in 3 different pens up the hill in the back yard and 4 free ranging roos who go back and forth between all the caged roos. The air here reeks with crowing. LOL None of the chick roos have started crowing yet.

You must have very tolerant or distant neighbors.

They have animals too. We live in the country where it is accepted and expected. I don't mind their dogs yapping or their chickens crowing and we all band together to ward off the coyotes and the bears.

Yeah, there is quite the song going on here too. I only have 3 that are loud.. My Ameraucana roo is obnoxious he is so loud.. The rest are Serama, and out of those 4, only one has a shrill voice.

I do have a teen Serama that has a foot fetish.. Yes, he loves my toes.. All the dominance practices don't help his love for my bright pink toenail polish. LOL I think when I put him in a "sleeper hold" he dreams of my toes! LOL

I went out to check on my little ones (six-week-old Speckled Sussex, White Leghorn and Welsummer chicks, and Naragansett turkeys) and one of the Sussex boys was on top of the house crowing. So cute. More like a proto-crow. I am thinking about keeping a quartet of the Sussex meat birds to try our luck at brooding, one roo and three hens. The photo shows some of them dust and sun bathing at three weeks.

Looks like a plane crash. LOL

Your babies are so cute! I love to watch them roll around dusting. Some of them almost flip over on their backs.
