I'm seeking information regarding a natural spring. DG administrator didn't know which forum would be appropriate; thought I'd give this a shot.
Thanks,
Tozai
Anyone with knowledge of hydrology?
you didnt say what the problem with the spring is? natural springs are how we dug our ponds so they would have water all summer, but! where the water comes to air IS NOT always the actual source of the spring, and is it fresh water, sulphur, salt water????
Kittriana:
I have a small fresh water spring that begins under a rock shelf at the base of a hill. I'm guessing the water is moving through cracks in the rock . The stream that's created then flows across a natural depression until it reaches the road. I know from test holes that the water table is only 12-15 inches beneath the surface in this depression. My main concern is, what will happen to the spring if I dig in this depression? If I excavate a large area approx. 2 ft. deep, the hole will fill with water of course, but is there a possibility the spring will re-locate itself & begin flowing from the hole?
I don't know ANYTHING, about this stuff, I am merely throwing out some thoughts to you.
Could there be a sinkhole or a cave in the area?
Is it legal to use spring water in your state? If not, you could end up in a lot of hot water if they find out. I know some states really regulate using 'public' waters. I think here in MO it is illegal to gather creek rock, to relocate or change the direction of a creek, or to pump water out for livestock? I don't know, but anyway, you might to look into some of that, as fines can sometimes be pretty steep I would imagine.
Also the water would come out pretty cold (?) so I don't know about keeping the pond steady in temp or whatever.
If the sinkhole/cave idea pans out, digging could obviously result in a cave in, ha ha good pun...
Depends how deep you go? Would you want to walk in your pond? Maybe you could do some tests to see what the depth of solid ground is. Okay I am just in to that because I know springs, caves and sink holes go hand in hand, at least around here.
FrillyLily, Kittriana and others:
As I said in my original post, the DG administrator couldn't suggest an appropriate forum for my questions.
This seemed to be the best choice because it does deal with water at least, but please understand:
my questions have NOTHING to do with ponds, plants, fish or gardens. I simply need to know what, if anything, will happen to the spring if I dig a large hole nearby. I would not be using the spring water for any purpose, redirecting the flow or pumping water out.
OH, gotcha!
well same idea applies, if you dig in an area that is thin, it could redirect, cave in or who knows. Probably nothing would happen, but it would fill w water as you said if the water table is low like that.
