My dad lives in the country. He keeps several dogs around to protect his garden. Last year when he went to dig sweet potatoes, the little jack-rats started jumping up and down in the potato rows, they were after a rattlesnake. They finally started baying and my dad was able to kill the snake. My dad feels that they probably saved his life.
Believe it or not, when one of the puppies was 5 months old she killed a 4 foot rattlesnake. When she catches a snake, she will not let go of it. The other dogs try to help her kill it, but since she won't let go of it, it ends up torn to pieces. She was bitten by a snake early on, got real sick, but survived. I'm sure she hates snakes more than ever now.
I love animals mostly for companionship, but for so much more. Most dogs would give their lives for you. That's something amazing to me.
