Trees?

Denver Metro Area, CO(Zone 5a)

Hi,

We recently moved to a house with Russian Olive trees as a windbreak. Since these are now labelled noxious weeds, we pulled out a bunch of them...leaving an area that needs other trees, now. We'd love to grow fruit trees hardy to our zone but they are proving to be expensive wherever we look (though I did get a stick of crabapple for $12.50).

Does anyone have an idea where we can find reasonably priced (read cheap), well rooted, trees and bushes? We have tried the Arbor Day Foundation trees in the past but too many were poorly rooted and did not survive our winters.

If anyone has some trees available for trade (or sale?) please let me know?
Thanks,
Diane/Bloomin

Do you have native plant sales in your area? I have a bunch of Birch trees that I bought bareroot at a native plant sale. The price was good because they were all bareroot. They've done well here - and we had a lot of Birch when I lived in Alaska, too, so I'd consider Birch as an option to replace the olives.

It looks like the National Wildlife Federation is having a native plant sale on the 15th. It looks like in your area, as in ours, there were a bunch of sales last weekend. I did a quick search on Google of Denver plant sales:

I've got 10,000 seedling Maple trees popping up all over my property. Our Maple trees are quite fertile. I have them in size from a few inches to 2 - 3 feet tall. Are you interested in Maple trees. They grow very quickly.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Wow Marti001! My ash tree does that, but sure wish I had a maple tree or 2 instead. If you can spare a couple of them, keep me in mind, please.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

What size do you want? I have 4 of them in pots that are at least 2 feet tall. Plus all the little seedlings growing everywhere. I can send you a box full and that way if some don't make it, you should get some to make it.

You can also mail the "seeds"! I mailed some to Ala. years ago, and they survived. Just write HAND STAMP on the env. The seeds grow fast.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Marti, not picky as to what size. Beggars can't be choosy, ya know, lol! That would be awesome! Thanks! Let me know how much I owe you for them, I'm in the address exchange or send me a dmail. Wow! Thanks!

Will you be growing anything around these new plants you are putting in?

I have bunches of baby Winged Euonymus / Burning Bush.....birds love the seeds!
Beautiful red color in fall....grows very tall~mine are about 12-15 feet. There are babies ranging from 6 inches to two feet.

Let me look to see what else I may have growing (not today it's very rainy out).

ps...I too love the maple...but find it very difficult to garden beneath. Beautiful for the yard tho. Not so lovely on other plant roots. Those little hairy roots have tried to choke out several of my other plants.

That's why I'm putting in raised beds under the trees. I will keep the raised bed back from the truck of the tree so the tree can breathe. My shade garden is will also be a raised bed under the maples.

I will get some baby trees out in the mail next week after my check gets here.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your fast replies! Marti001, do the maples handle late spring snows pretty well? I had one in my last yard and it just didn't flourish because of our late snows. I don't know what variety it was, though....

Burning bushes are gorgeous and would make a great windbreak. How many of them can you spare, Elfenqueen? It helps that you are in a colder climate...they would be content, here. :)

I don't think we'll put anything under the windbreak. It's on the fenceline and we have the stumps of the removed Russian Olives to plant around. There are about 35 stumps! You can understand why we can't afford to go to the garden center and buy replacements!

These seem to be very hardy Maples. They handle all kinds of weather and storms here. No gurantees though. But I'll send Maple tree seedlings to anyone who wants to try them.

I would love some of them..............................................................................

Tubby, are you saying you want some of the maples too or are you talking to someone else?
If you are talking to me I'll take the peonies in trade. If your not talking about my Maple tree, I'd still like some peonies.
