Hi Folks,
These are my first veggie harvest of the season and I'm wondering why tey are all bumpy? And is it ok to have bumpy crooknecks? Thanks!
Crooknecks Bumpy
When some squash mature they develop warts. Nothing is wrong with your squash. Its just older than when people usually pick it.
You apparently have the old OP Summer Crookneck. It is naturally warted, one of the best tasting tho. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/6575/
McP - that is what I grow is the OP crookneck Farmerdill mentioned. It is bumpy and it is very good tasting squash! Your's beat mine - I have a few ready to harvest in a day or two!
Okay folks, thanks for the news - Naturally Warted - jeez, I like that. I think I'll make it my new handle.
Mary McNaturallyWarted......hah!
I like that handle!
I've seen her and she doesn't have any warts - lol...
I used to be naturally curly, but that was before I paused, so to speak....and naturally warted could be more an attitude/emotional kinda thing. ;~)
Now that part I can see;P
If your squash is bumpy it was probably a variety developed by the Oklahoma Dept of Transportation! LOL - worst roads in the country (the parts that I've been to, anyway)
That's funny Ima!
OK does not have a monopoly on potholes. The way they're raising taxes, the roads around here could be paved with gold.
I like those warty crooknecks.
Snowy, icy winter = snow plows = potholes big enough to drop my Miata into it.
And quit complaining about your warts...at least you've got veggies! (Your personality's another thing altogether, Mswartsalot!)
We had another freeze last night, but this SHOULD be the end of it. I am sooooo ready to see even the tiniest hint of anything popping out! Even warty ole squash!
Sigh. And here my broccoli is going to flower. I fear my peas are doomed, too. But the squash is happy....
Jeez, a freeze in May, what a bummer. I used to live in the northeast, grew up in Vermont, and I don't miss the winters. But our summers are brutal. I'd love to have a 'summer home' someplace where the summer air does not feel like a blast furnace. We're headed to the pine trees for camping next week. It's still cold up there too.
Hang on, summer's comin'!
LOL, Mary! Maybe you should come here for the summer and I should come there for the winter! Honestly, I don't mind the winters that much. Did high school and college in Southern California, then spent a great deal of my life in FLorida, so the return to the NE 20 years ago was most welcomed, and I still haven't grown tired of the seasons. AZ doesn't sound bad, though I think I'd be more likely to head for Flagstaff temps myself!
Yeah I know Kelly, it's a whole different concept.
Sequee, my sister and her family live in Baldwinville (Syracuse). Where's Carmel?
Way south and east of Syracuse, which is probably a
zone 5a (?).
Dunno about her zone, don't think she's a gardener.
Have a great weekend!
