Spider mites

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We were gone two days and came home to see some leaf drop. Today, I was trimming some brugs for a swap and realized they had spider mites. I have some Bayer 3-in-1. Will that stop 'em? Should i strip the leaves? They're just getting ready to bloom again.
I've been spraying the "recipe" every other day, and I did ground fertilize everything about 2 wks ago. I've been very fortunate to not get mites, even in the hottest, driest summers here. I'm stumped. And we have to leave again soon.

Never mind...I found an answer....

tell me the answer, please?

Merino, Australia

I have had infestations of spider mite here in Australia on my brugs too. I found that some were really attacked where others right next to them were not affected. I wanted to get at the mites immediately and had no bug spray at the time, so I used a spray bottle of water with Eucalyptus oil added plus a little detergent to help it stick to the plant.
It worked and I have used it quite a few times with success.
I added about 1 small teaspoon of the oil to 1.5 litres of water. You have to be careful not to use too much Eucalyptus oil as it can damage young leaves.
I use this spray on young seedlings too to keep pests away and now whenever I see any mites I spray everything .
I also found that a spray of White Oil will help if nothing else is available.

White oil? Kerosene? Mineral oil?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

it seems to be mineral oil... here's a link to a recipe for using it for plants/insects

lol thats nice!! Neem no one uses that? It is weird some plants seem to be bullet proof and others have a big target sign blinking brugs , plumeria seedlings one right next to its covered in rust next one nothing The brugs I have had here for years are bullet proof pay some good money and its like some one yelled lunch lol I have been using conserve naturalyte the active ingredient is spinosad good product here. I was using it for citrus leaf miner gooled what was good to use on munchers on brugs and spinosad came up so I gave it a shot sprayed it 2:00 in afternoon no burn works great !

Gordon, have you used oil much for insect control? I don't understand why it doesn't block the pores of the leaves.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

it surely would block the pores.. but they will open as it's washes to a lighter film.. even the worst has it's finish...
Personally I use some of the newer high end posions one of which is Avid.. they kill the eggs also... the oils leave the eggs unbothered ..awaiting time to hatch for you.. but you can reapply... getting underneath every leaf.. Avid has the benefit of being able to kill underneath where the vast majority are... by just landing on the top of the leaf .. and you get so little of it.. and use such a micro ammount... I believe it upsets the plants functioning less... unlike a blanket of oil left on the leaves for days does.. but they get over it ... shrug it off and start opening up the pores again..
Sure .. plenty of folks use Neem... it's a battle for sure... finding one you like.. with the results is important.. I use it in conjunction with a battery of others.. I'm right on the border of Wildlife Habatat ... and Toxic Dump.. But I did get my Wildlife Habatat certification ..

I know last year on this forum I saw something about using Bayer all in one on brugs.
Does anyone remember the ratio, cause that seemed the easiest since I don't have to spray. Don't like spraying where I have to breath.

I have used the Bayer three in one for shrubs and trees. I just mixed it according to directions. I use the liquid.

I also have some Forbid, I think it is to spray for the mites.

Can anyone tell me where one can buy Avid (or other forms of Abamectin) online in affordable quantities or has some to sell? I'm most interested in a form that can be diluted with water and sprayed, as opposed to baits.

Forbids on ebay resonable

Thanks. I looked up Forbid. It's generic name is Spiromesifen, which a different miticide than Abamectin and of a different class of chemical compounds.

Abamectin is the generic name for Avid. I've had very good results with Abamectin in the past and would like to get some. Forbid certainly looks like a good alternative. The price on Ebay is about $22.50 for enough to make 12 gallons of spray. That seems reasonable as far as these things go.

Rosemania has these and other newer sprays.. and mitisides ... easy ordering..

Thank you. I've decided to get small amounts of both Avid and Forbid repackaged for sale on eBay.

I don't know much about Forbid, but Avid is a relatively safe compound as far as mammalian toxicity is concerned. Chemically it's part of a class of bacterial fermentation products known as Avermectins . These include compounds used for parasites such as worms and mites in both human and veterinary medicine. A well-known example is Heartgard, which is used to prevent heart worm in dogs. I point this out as some pesticides are much safer for animals than others and tt's well worth the additional cost for the extra peace of mind.

thanks atisch.. good to know more about it...and it's relative safety.. I guess I choose Advid as the plastic explosives
[ used in a controled approved manner ] I had been using on a bad mite infestation have been getting more difficlut to come upon..

Yeah Gordon, they have cracked down on selling that anymore...LOL
I am not sure that ever got rid of them, just spread them out a bit more.
