Bird Seed

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

What is best for storing bird seed -- freezer or refrigerator? Heard pros and cons for both. Have half a large sack of nyjer seed and would like to keep it until the finches return next year. I know this is an old question but would appreciate your opinions.

Hi flower, I don't know if you can store nyjer in a freezer for that long. The normal shelf life in a cool spot is six months. Let me have a look around and I'll see if I can find any more info.

Since mine doesn't get eaten that fast I'm trying to buy it in smaller quantities.

Okay I thought I might be long on the shelf life of nyjer.

Nyjer has a shelf life of 3 months

If frozen it can last for 6 months

Pelletory, Thank you for your reply. I'll just put them in a feeder or on the ground and see if any other birds might enjoy them. I thought that the freezer might dry them out as well and since they won't return here until December or January, they will have to be tossed out. Thank you for the website as well. I appreciate your info.
