Artichokes

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

I started artichokes from seed last year. They did fairly well. of course, no actual edible chokes. They did not come back up this year! What went wrong? Or is it too early for them to be coming up?

Artichokes can't take snow or heavy frost. Unless you live in CA, AZ or the deep south, you should bring them indoors during the winter. Most likely, your plants died during the winter.

I also grew artichokes from seed last year. They did come back this year and it is looking great. I had 2 small chokes last year.
I lost 2 of the 3 plants in the fall, got eaten by moles, or some underground critter. Maybe yours got eaten? I was able to save the 3rd one by lifting it and adding wire mesh under it. It looks great now, came up over a month ago and is now a foot tall.

I did mulch heavily with straw and it is in a fairly protected area, between a privacy fence, house and concrete driveway.

Try again, the chokes we had last year were absolutely delicious.

I don't think it's too early for them to come up. In my experience, when they do come back the next spring, it's pretty early. Sometimes they come back, sometimes they don't. I've had the best luck with artichokes coming back in my deepest (highest?) raised bed. Must just keep it a tad warmer is my guess. I'm taking a break from them for a while. They take up a lot of space for not much production. So I'll stick with my productive veggies... for now. I have to say, they have been the biggest conversation piece in my garden when I do grow them.

They are super expensive here to buy and last summer our stores never even carried them! So I really want to grow them. Unless I can find plants, tho, too late to start from seed now. :(
