OT Do anyone know

if the new energy saving bulbs can be used at a high wattage than the lamp recommends as long as the wattage use is below the recommended watts?? ex Touch Lamp says 25 watt max and the new energy saving bulb is 60 watt but only uses 13 watts. Would that be safe?? I am so tired of not being able to see well in dim light with my poor vision

The limited wattage restriction is due to the heat it puts out. That being the case your sixty watt that only uses 13 watts should be just fine. One thing that will help you to feel better about it is to go ahead and use it and from time to time watch and feel the heat at the base of the unit. If it feels to hot, then it probably is but I think you'll find it works just fine. Haystack.

Thanks Hay I am going to give it a try

Donna: Let me know how it goes for you, and good luck. I can really relate to dim lights and vision problems. I'm sure your going to do just fine...Hay

Yes, it will be OK. The "60 watts" is just saying that it puts out the equivalent light of a regular 60 watt bulb, but it does this using only 13 watts. So if the fixture is rated for 25 watts, you'll be fine.

great to hear. I put 1 bulb in and kept checking it. Not hot but is only 2 way touch now instead of 3 way. Wonder what will happen when I change all 3 of the bulbs. Actually it is so bright with the 1 bulb I don't think I need to put in anymore and will take out the other 2 normal 25 watt bulbs

Thanks for the input Hay and Gallesfarm

well the lamp stopped working. I guess because it was 3 way touch

Beautiful babies, some of them look like welsummers? Very pretty.

Do you have a thermometer in with them, or are you just going by their peeping and sleeping arrangements?

I don't think it's the amount of light.. it's warmth. I use heat lamps and a dimmer.

I tried using black lights once and damaged the chicks' vision.

I usually use a 75 watt bulb in a shop lamp reflector. Just clamped on the side of the brooder and aimed down about 9 inches above the litter. The chicks sort of find their own comfort zones.

Of course I usually have no more than 20 chicks at a time and they are in a medium sized plastic bin. Large enough for them to move away from the heat if they want, but small enough to prevent drafts. Eventually I use lower wattage bulbs...but ZZ's use of a dimmer is genius.

oops sorry yall. Didn't mean to put that pic there. Wrong thread. My Touch lamp went out I tried to put the energy saver bulbs in that were a larger watt but used lesser watts

Yes I have a brooder light. Had 90 watt in it but just upped it to 125. Got way cooler after sunset. They were staying right under it. I keep them in lg rubber made container too with puppy pads untill they start scratching them, then go to lg pine shavings. Still no change in the sick baby. Just sleeps. I give it vit/sugar water evry hour or more as much as I can get it to take, about 5 little water bubbles off the tip of a syringe

I may suggest boiled egg yolk in the water rather than sugar... as sugar will give them a little energy to get going, but boiled egg yolk will give it protein.. Just what I do.. when they are in trouble. After trauma like that, it may not make it though. I hope so. :)

I "revived" one with yogurt. - Just something else to try.
