I planted these bulbs and each year they flower and multiply and for the life of me I cannot remember what they are? Some one please help. That won't help my memory, but at least I will have one mystery solved!! Xuling
my memory is severely lacking
Sorry I can't help, but I had to chime and and say they're just lovely!
Hope someone can answer your question for you.
I believe they're Sparaxis, xuling. Lovely bulbs!
Sparaxis sounds familiar. Thanks faeden. There are billions of them. Do they need separation periodically in order to keep blooming well? xuling
You're welcome. I know they can be left for years in the same space, but I imagine that if their flowers begin to decline that's an indication that they should be separated.
Sounds like you have the ideal conditions for them! Have you thought about getting other South African bulbs? They should do well for you in your area.
I have been trying to eliminate bulbs from my thinking. While I love all the Bearded Iris, they are a lot of work the rest of the year. All my daffodils grew greenery this year but not one bloomed. The Hyacinths come back fewer every year and they don't do real swell, allright, but not real swell. The Crocosmia hardly grew and then they all died. How many others have gone to bulb heaven in my yard? (quite a few). Can you name some South African bulbs? Maybe I will look into them. In the meantime if I dig up my Daffofils (my utter all time favorite flower what do I do with them? I hate to just throw them into the trash. Xuling

Don't trash them. Lets talk!!! What kind / color do you have? I think I'm interested in them. I have bearded irises but I don't think you like irises.

Some which are fairly easy to acquire and should do as well as the Sparaxis in your area are Tritonia, Ixia, Freesia, Lachenalia, Homeria, Gladiolus (species), Amaryllis belladona, and Watsonia. Take a look here for many more: http://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/PhotographsAndInformation
Some North American genera which should do well for you are Brodiaea, Triteleia, Habranthus, and Kniphofia.
Any questions, just ask. Maybe Marie will chime in here with her picks; she has a good collection too.
