Pictures Finally!

Spiro, OK(Zone 7a)

Okay, this will be quite a few pics from around the farm yesterday. Chickens the garden and some flowers. I have a few questions about the chickens, so I'll ask with the pic. Whoo hoo! This one is the view down our driveway to the pond.

Okay, here's "Rooster" (from the Jerk of a Roo thread). Anyone know what kind he is?

Next up is "Babyface" - Again, not sure what she is - she's got really cool poofy feathers around her jowl area.

Here's "Buffy", who I think is a Bantam Buff Brahma?

Here's my favorite guy - this is "Junior", the alpha roo.

Here's a full body of Junior - is he a black cochin bantam?

This is Eddie (named after Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam because my kids call the Polish "rockstar" chickens) - is he a boy or a girl - I still can't tell even though he's 2 1/2 months old.

This is Principesa (Princess) - also not sure if the name is appropriate!)

Two of the ducks - the white one isn't named, but the other is Rorschach.

My son Joe in the coop - he's 2 1/2 years old.

Remember Popeye, the chicken with the swollen eye? Here she is - no swelling but no eye either. :(

The little girl is "Awesome", my four-year-old's chicken. I think the white one is a leghorn.

I think that's enough pics for now, so I'll leave you with a shot of our chicken run in progress...

Nice lookin bunch you got there and your place looks like a piece of Heaven. That poofy feathered one looks like an Americauna. Just guessin'.

Your property is gorgeous! I would love to see more photos of it.

Your little boy is sooo cute. I wish we had lived in the country and had animals when my kids were little. You're giving your kids a great life!

Wow such a wonderful place! I love the pics! Here are the notes I wrote as I looked at each pic.. (which was really fun!)

The Jerk looks like Dutch Bantam?
Babyface is Ameraucana
Buffy I don't know Brahmas that good.
Junior is Cochin.
Eddie might be changed to Edie. LOL

Joe is an absolute DOLL :)

Popeye is a really beautiful color.

Thank you for the tour..

My main thought on the Polish is that they don't seem to have combs or wattles and neither has crowed. (So far, only Junior and Rooster have that distinction). It'd be cool if they were both girls (or one of each). Here's another of Joe behind the bearded irises.

What kind is this little girl?

Has the same markings as my black sex link pullets.

Babyface looks almost exactly like Nefertiti, one of our Americaunas. We have 4, all different plumage colors and very sweet. One looks like an owl because her cheeks are soo puffy. I wish I could have as many types as you!

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Well, that Joe is just a sweetie pie. Are you other children as cute?

Spiro, OK(Zone 7a)

Yessiree, Gwendalou - they just weren't hanging out with me while I was doing my photoshoot around the farm.

Ferndale, WA

Great pic's, I love the pond area. Yeah I have to agree with ZZ's I think for sure Eddie is an Edie, and princes is so cute and I like her name. Joe is very handsome, and seems to like the farm alot...What a great place to raise children. Great tour and nice looking soon to be run...Hay

Did you seen the infor on Cubit.org, and did it help? Just curious.

Your farm looks wonderful; how much land do you have? Isn't it great to be raising kids amongst all those animals? When ours were little we also had sheep and goats and rabbits, and they got to watch an occasional birth and of course the daily milking chores. As they got a bit older they each had specific jobs, like bringing hay to the sheep or feeding the rabbits, and I am convinced that it helped them develop the good work ethic that I see in them today! They knew that their help was valued and that the animals depended on them; I think that makes kids feel really good about themselves!

By the way, is Rorschach black? When I was a kid I had a black Cocker Spaniel that I named Rorschach because when she was lying down she looked just like a puddle of black ink!

Hay, I did read your lesson, and it was fantastic information. "Rooster" isn't mean to me though, just those younger Buff Orpingtons.

I'm a little irritated now too, because I got 8 straight run Buffs and when I got them home, I said to myself, "Hmmm...one of these birds clearly has no comb, while the other 7 are far more developed". I figured it was SO unlikely that the girl would sell me SEVEN roos with one girl, since even as a noob, I could tell that was probably the case. I think she was just unloading them on unsuspecting old me. They are sparring now, so I'm thinking that *may* have been why "Rooster" was trying to kick their collective butts. :) Well, two have died, of no apparent cause, even after they were separated. I have no idea what's going on. I hope my whole flock doesn't start falling like dominoes.

I'm putting up the wire on the chicken run today and tomorrow, and so hopefully we'll be done before it rains all next week!

Greenhouse_gal, we've got 22 acres (it's actually my mother-in-law's farm - we live in the guesthouse for now). The pond is 3 acres. Most of the land is hay, and the chicken run is in one of the 1-acre paddocks/corrals. It is absolutely wonderful having my kids living "the farm life". I am intent on having them know where their food comes from and to provide healthier foods for them that we produce ourselves. We go out every morning together and feed and water (and muck, when necessary) and particularly my middle son, Nico, LOVES being out there. His chicken's name is Awesome and she is a bantam that looks like a regular bird you'd see in a tree, not a chicken. We call Nico "the Chicken Whisperer" because he can pretty much hold them however he likes and they just lay there, unperturbed. When we can't catch the ducks to bring them down to the pond, we just ask Nico, and he'll be over in seconds with a duck clutched to his chest. It's pretty funny, but I love it! My oldest, Vinny, has been getting acclimated to the birds as well. He is pretty nervous about them, but has caught and held Junior, Rooster and Awesome since they are smaller and more hand-friendly.

Rorschach is an anomaly. He's black on his back, white on his front, and his bill is speckled. He's got a big tuft of feathers on top of his head. We called him Rorschach because when he was little (and still to a degree now) had what looked like a symmetrical ink splotch on his head.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I figured those Polish were girls, because so far, only Junior and Rooster are crowing, and all of those guys are the same age.

Here are all three of my boys helping to unload wood one of our friends gave to us.

What a great life for your boys! They all look very handsome and very intent on their job in that photo, too.

After I sent my post I took a better look at the photo of your duck and realized why you called him Rorschach!
