help taking care of tillandsia cyanea

Lake Charles, LA

I just purchased a tillandsia cyanea. Should I put it outside or keep it inside? Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Angela

...in the shade outside (maybe not in the dead of winter though in LA)

I suggest you search through http://bsi.org for cultural tips. Cyanea is not the typical Tillandsia super air plant and is better grown in a fibrous very loose mix.

It is in a small pot. Would you re-pot it and in what medium. I will look at the site you posted.

Small pot is ok - it's only important that the bottom of the plant doesnt stay wet, so a very well draining mix is best. I use an orchid-like mix - fir bark (fairly small pieces), shredded wood (from my shredder), and about a third of regular potting mix. I don't think the mix itself is important as long as the roots and bottom of the plant get some air.

It's also possible to grow these mounted on bark or driftwood with a little spagnum moss around the roots to retain a little moisture. But many people have problems in Winter when you have to take in the plants. With the very short Winter in LA it might be worth a try. Best bet would be to find someone near you who has more experience than me at growing Bromeliads outside.
