What are the chances of this little sweetie staying this color?

Is there any way to tell the sex of these guys?

Lodi, United States

What kind are they?

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Mostly Easter eggers but Im not sure what the black ones are. Im pretty sure they are all a good mix.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Chances of that grey one staying a blue-grey colour, maybe with splashes of black, are pretty good. Congrats on such a pretty chick - i just love that colour!

Ferndale, WA

I'm with Claire, I just love that color, But I also love the others, they look like a bunch of little bandido's. How cute. Congrats and thanks for sharing those great pic's.

Richmond, TX

What cuties! I love the chipmunk-looking ones! What are the nests made from?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That lil blue looks like it has feathered legs? So cute! They are darling! EEs are hard to guess the gender..

Lodi, United States

I was hoping you'd say Silver Laced Wyandottes...I just learned how to sex them:0)

Richmond, TX

How? Do tell!

Lodi, United States

I can't find the picture, but in some strains of certain breeds, and SLW are supposed to be one; in day old chicks (i.e., very young) the pullet's emerging wing feathers are staggered, long, short, long, short...while the roo's are even.

I think I posted this before, but it is a nice summation of the more common chick sexing traits:

Don't you hate when you write your hole post then forget to hit send before you move on lol!
Well here it goes again.... Thank you all for your comments! Im glad to hear the gray blue chick may keep its color now I just hope its a hen! The others do look like chipmunks and I think most of my adult chickens looked like this as babies. I have 2 large black hens but I don't know what kind they are. As for the nesting boxes they are large laundry baskets. One of these days DH will build me some real nesting boxes till then these will have to do :)

Farmington, NM(Zone 5a)

i have a little gray one like that too! it was my free one from mcmurray... must be, since i have several of each of the other colors and only one that color. but it sure is cute! my son says that one is eragon (i think he meant sapphira, since that is the name of the dragon, and she's blue which is kind of close to chick fluff gray, but he got mixed up)

have not had time to post a picture of the babies - too busy (bad time of year for us, in addition to trying to nurse some who didnt' travel very well) in fact have not had time to be on the internet AT ALL for a week. hopefully tomorrow if we finish decorating for my son's school fundraiser early enough tonight.

Conroe, TX

TOOOO cute. Such adorable little fuzz balls.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

The remaining 3 eggs have not hatched yet and the hens are not sitting on them any more, just pushed aside. Are they bad eggs or just not enough room under Mom?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

They are probably not going to hatch. I just pulled 3 eggs that didn't hatch from my broody, even though she has chicks, she was gonna keep them. I just felt that was asking too much. LOL One was infertile and 2 were just not going to hatch. Moms usually know..

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

I cracked in to them today to see what was in them... It just looked like scrambled egg. Is that unfertilized or something else?

Lodi, United States

Either unfertilized or just stopped developing early (common occurrence) or was fertile but just never developed at all.

If you candle them and see a dark ring around the circumference of the egg, it means the chick started to develop and then stopped for some reason very early in the development. It is called a blood ring.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Cute chicks. love the blue one. I would like a whole flock of blue orpingtons.

Richmond, TX

I've never had Blue Orpingtons but I have a couple of blue Jersey Giants and they are very attractive.

I took a pic of my new nursery flight for the babies to start growing up in.The trough holds the very small and new hatches until they have a good start then i release them into the mix.the ceter bird with the mohawk is the lil black chick that hatched with the salmon faverollies. Its not a favoeroli but im thinking mabie a slikie cochin??? beautifil chick anyway.I also have a few ducks growing up a little in there.just a cute chick shot!
