Garlic or leek or both

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I had both at one time, Dh transplanted all these at the edge of the woods, and he did keep them seperate, so I think one pile is garlic and one is leeks but I could be wrong, can you tell by these pics which is which?

Heres the other pile of them, the stalks are narrower, like maybe these are garlic.

They both look like leeks, with flat leaves. Doesn't garlic have a more rounded hollow leaf, like onions?

I have no idea, perhaps this is why I haven't gotten much of a bulb on the ones I did pull Ha!! thanks

My garlic has flat leaves. If I had to guess, the second photo is the garlic, the first the leeks. Mainly judging by the leave formation on the stalks.

Don't know much about leeks but the garlic is best harvested when the tops begin to dry and break over. Your bulbs might not be developed fully yet.

kayhy - this is going to be of no help - but your first photo looks like my garlic. I am also growing leeks, but this is my first year of growing them, so I wouldn't like to give judgement on your second photo.

Look like leaks to me ,
look at the base of the plant just before it goes into the soil the size will change on garlic and be basically straight (unchanged) if a leek.

I'll take a few more pics today close ups of the bottoms, I'd like to use them if their leeks. I do have another place that I know is garlic and I'll take shots of that one too

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I can't really tell from the 2nd photo, but the first one definitely looks like leeks to me.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

WEll, here's some definite garlic, How on earth can one tell the difference, this is planted somewhere else, it already has heads forming on the top, it all looks the same to me

in the mean time I need to figure out w hat to use leeks in cause it looks like I have tons of them and their growing int he shaded woods LOL

Are they young leeks? cause they kind of remind me of green onions, (the ones in front)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Ok, got my Dh to dig up 3 of them, the first one came from the first photo, second came from the second photo and the third came from the last photos that I know is garlic.

Now they all look alike right now don't they LOL

but DH said they do smell a little diff, says the first two smell likeonion and the third smells like garlic, I can't tell the diff in the smell, but my sniffer is not working right LOL

I want to know if I accidentally use the garlic in my soup thinking it s leek what will happen?

WEll, I just cut the ends off and the tops and smelled, and you can DEFINTELY tell a diff now, the two in first are leeks and the one behind (last one) is garlic, someone said both those first two pics looked like leeks, well, I think your right, they smell like onion adn the last one on the chair definitely smells like garlic. should have dug and chopped first off,

that cockaleeky soup sounds good. making veggie soup tonight and putting the real leek in it LOL

Kathy - I'm glad you found out which was which :) A little garlic goes a loooooong way.

Yes, my leeks are young. They'll probably be ready around the end of June.
