I have lived here 4 1/2 yrs and never had a Coyote even close to my property. Now for the last week there is a pack right on top of me. I have been going out there and shooting into the ground and they disappear or at least I don't hear them anymore. I am so worried about them getting my adult geese which are loose at night because I have the goslings and pond duck babies in their cage. They tried to eat the duck babies. Or digging into my Exotic Duck Aviary. I have way to much money invested in them to replace and of course I would hate to loose my chickens too as I hatched and raised them.
I have flood lights on all night(always have) and they all have lights in their coops that stay on all night. The Aviary doesn't and it is next to the woods my biggest fear.
How can I deter them. Don't laugh!!!!! Would it help to collect my urine and pour it on the ground around the pens???? I know they have a very sharp sense of smell. Fencing is out of the question other than maybe running some chicken wire through the trees but I am sure they could eat right through it just like the pens. I am just sick with worry
Help!!! What to do
Some people have sworn by this product that is blinking red lights...does anyone remember the name?
I have the site bookmarked at home but can't recall the name right now. If no one comes up with it between now and when I get home I will post it; I get home around 5 Pacific.
Well that didn't take long for the memory cell to kick in.....http://www.niteguard.com/
I've heard people have success with it with raccoons, I don't recall what was said about coyotes.
Speaking of coyotes, my aunt & uncle that live here in Portland, saw one in their backyard a few nights ago. It wouldn't seem that unusual except they have a 6 foot solid board fence around the entire backyard!

lol found this
PredatorPee.com
Niteguard claims it does deter coyotes. And it seems to be a very reputable company that will honour its guarantee and give full refunds.
See the response below to a customer who felt it was not working against resident owls (they felt they were handled very fairly):

Thanks Catscan, I didn't have time to check the website. I was going by comments on the duck forum on BYC.
well I am trying the wolf urine. 6, 1 month dispensers and a 12 oz. bottle of the urine was only 33 dollars with free priority mail. enough to make a good perimater around the pens that will be here quick. will also check into the niteguard and other things as a permanent solution
I have used the red lights.. only I am too cheap to but that one.. I have a string of red blinking christmas lights.. I usually hear the coyotes about a week before they get here.. closer each night.. as soon as I hear, I start leaving the lights on at night.
I changed this year to the new bulbs.. saves me a dollar.
Excellent idea Fran! I'll make note of that, it certainly would be less expensive than the Niteguard. We don't have coyotes in the area, at least that I'm aware of, but we do have plenty of raccoons. I've also noticed an increase in opossums.
A donkey will chase off coyotes. We have large dogs which seem to deter them too. Our dogs, however, would also make short work of the poultry if they could get to them.
I have a book with old time gardening ideas but it also gives some old tips. They suggest putting dog hair all around the pens the coyote will smell a dog but not know where it is at .Being a dog groomer im sure you can go to any local grooming shop and ask for a large trash bag of dog hair.I did this in florida around my chicken pens as we had a bad coyote problem and i never lost a chicken to a preditor its worth a try for free.

Try leaving a radio on all the time,
Radio is good idea. Think I will find a weatherband radio since it will be all talk and no music. Music might upset the ducks which is where I would put it since the Aviary runs 40' along the edge of the woods
Flashing lights is a good idea to try and very in expensive
Love the dog hair idea too
PP I read today a lot of sheep farmers use Llamas and cut their losses by 50%
Thanks everyone for the ideas
DH reloaded my clip so I'm ready for them if they show up again tonight. Hoping they skip tonight. They have been skipping a night after since I started shooting when I hear them
