What's up mi amigos? Man, this is the time of year that will bend, but hopefully not break you. How is everyone? We've been beaver busy, but I haven't forgotten about DG. This really is the best site for people wanting to raise their own food, bar none. Anywho, we've had 2 more litters from our 3/4 Spot 1/4 Large Black sisters, Perk & Twiggy as you can see in the photo, and our farmers' market season is in full gear. We turned our grower pigs into the spring paddock you can see here: www.thehaywire.typepad.com Hope everyone is doing well, and you're flocks or herds are thriving!
More piglets on the ground
What's cuter than a black pig with 4 white socks? Spotted piglets! LOL Tooo cute! Congrats with conquering the "cart" and sale, sure sounds like fun.
Man ZZ, the cart was an ordeal the first time out. I was strung tighter than a banjo string, but it actually went pretty smooth. By the second market it was a breeze. Those pigs are out of a purebred Spot boar we found that had very little Pietrain blood ( a German breed that the large U.S. factory farms imported back in the 80's for their extreme muscling) contamination. I named him Jethro because he's about as smart as a "cement pond" but he makes nice piglets!
I love your expressions! LOL It was fun reading your blog.. I was almost there. :) I'd love to do what you are doing.. sounds like a real blast...even with the learning "curves" that hurt! LOL
I kinda dream of having a concession cart, or trailer.. I drove a lunch truck that we cooked in for 8 years.. it's really fun... (to me anyway) We had the #1 route out of 12 trucks and made the most money.. We learned a lot about food service.
Darling pigs.. I don't care how dumb they are! :)
You can do anything you put your mind to, ZZ, and I'm a firm believer in that. Turn your dreams into reality, and if you need any help don't hesitate to holler. I've made all the mistakes you could run into already! LOL The old saying "if there's a will, there's a way" is absolutely 100% correct, and our farm is proof of that. There's nothing in this life more satisfying than raising the food that sustains your and my life in a responsible, sustainable manner.
Oh my goodness. That is just the cutest!
Glad I don't eat pork anymore. It made me feel sick. Now, I don't eat chicken because they are my beloved pets. lol
Lately I don't want to eat beef because it makes me feel bad too now. Not sure why. Are they spraying it with something different, or what?
Your picture is precious! Thank you.
That's a pile of pigs! Cute little beggars!
Oh my gosh! More spotted piggies!! They are so cute. I do agree with ZZ the black one with white socks in one of the other litters is cute too.
Wish I lived near you, I'd be a good customer.
If you're ever in the area Loreen, stop by and see us!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting the photo and the link. I'm stuck here in this office and wish I were out working in my garden! I can almost smell the fresh air through your photo!
Those are so cute!! My kids would have the best time with a bunch of those.
Obviously, in that case, you need some.
LOL Wanting and needing are not the same. :) We're not taking on any more critters until we can put in proper fencing but those are the cutest little pigs! We do have chickens and rabbits and just got 23 more chicks....
I'd like to get some rabbits again.
We have 4 Californians, a New Zealand and one lop of some sort. They were "supposed" to be 4H projects.......
I would like some of the giants.
They are calm and friendly birds, get along well with other hens, and although not particularly feed-efficient, they lay large brown eggs at the rate of about five a week - or mine do anyway.
I just had a moment to look further on the link you posted and checked out the veg beds. I'm using weed block for the first year myself and what a difference! I can spend more time just planting and picking, etc. Only just a bit of weeding. Woohoo!
Still can't stop looking at the little piggies, though!
Tulsa, how easy to handle are your sows when they have nursing pigs?
