Lima Bean Question

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I have never grown them and am wondering if they are a bush type or do they need something to climb on. Thanks.

It depends on which type you have. Some are bush & some are climbers.

They are available as either pole or bush varieties. Growth habits are similar to common beans but they need more heat.
Dixie Butterpea and Henderson's Baby Lima have the smaller vines of the bush type. There are a lot of bush type cultivars ranging from tiny to very large. Carolina/Sieva is a white baby type pole lima ( popular) Willowleaf has a longer DTM but is also a pole baby lima. Florida Butterbean is a small peckled pole lima. The popular big pole limas are Calico/Christmas ( speckled) and King of the Garden (white)

I've also had good results with Thorogreen which is a bush lima. They'll work you to death picking and look just like the frozen baby limas in the store. Butter peas are my fav to eat.

I got these in a trade ( don't remember who from ) and they just say large butter bean. they are big and white. I don't eat them myself so I was going to pass them on to my DIL.

Thanks for all the info. I'll pass it on too.
