Help me please... Silver Jewel and I don't want to kill it.

Irving, TX

I found a silver jewel begonia today. How do I keep this thing alive? Do I break down and get a terrarium?

Dude you don't have to buy a terrarium but it would be best. A simple plastic container or cover will be as effective. My Silver Jewel is in a cake container from a grocery store and doing great. My Brown Jewel is in a glass jar and is doing okay. My imperialis was uncovered most of the winter and was growing like mad but I watered it like crazy and the drip pan with gravel probably helped the humidity. I finally put a dome over this one because a lot of the larger older leaves were getting crispy edges.

Hope this helps.

Dude I found that Silver Jewel is one of the easier ones to keep alive. Mine did fine last fall when I moved it indoors and surrounded it with other begonias. Like Butch, I had the pots sitting in a gravel tray to increase humidity. It was fine for at least a month and I final;y moved mine to an open aquarium. In a couple of weeks, you should be able to have it outside.

THanks for the advice... One of the leaves already had brown edges when I got it so I went ahead and got a glass cookie jar today and am going to keep it in there. I just love this plant and don't want to lose it. I also go another begonia called Boomer and I have ordered 10 rex begonia plugs off of e-bay. I can't wait to see them on Wednesday. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Mine is doing fine in the terriraum. It is putting on new leaves and has put up a bloom stalk.

I finally moved my Soli mutata and Silver Jewel out of the fish tank to enjoy some St. Louis humidity in the outdoors.
