These were my grandmothers and I inherited them. There really isn't that many bulbs, just each bulb has 2-3 stalks.
Amaryllis in full bloom
AWESOME!
Sure does look like a lot of bulbs. Just Beautiful!
What a stunning display!
Thank you, just makes them more special that they were my grandmothers. I have no idea how old they are, she has been gone for 5 years and I don't know how long she had them. There are at least 3 bulbs that has 3 stalks each. There is one in there that is a 'double' It is beautiful!! It's not blooming yet. Still got other stalks coming up.
I'm jealous, I can't grow them outdoors in Massachusetts. I assume from your post that you have just left them in the ground and they come back year after year?
Yes, usually about the coldest we get is 30-32 at night, with the exception of the last two years which we have had down to 17. I am jealous because I can't grow tulips and others because we don't get enough cold weather.
Very beautiful...I love that lemon lime..
Gorgeous! I just transplanted the ones I have had in pots for several years into the ground - they had stopped blooming - so you have given me inspiration. Excellent display, GAgirl.
Thank you all.
Gorgeous, GAgirl! What a wonderful display!
Must be fun to have them grow outdoors so well!
They are all beautiful!!
Sandra :)
Oh my. They sure are pretty. I especially like the reds and that two tone last picture.
WOW! they are lovely! what do you do with them when they have finished flowering? Do you dig them up to free up more space?
No, in my zone they do perfectly well leaving them in the ground. I usually plant coleus or impatiens in between them to give color once they finish blooming.
HI, GAgirl1066!
What color is your double? Getting 2 to 3 stalks per bulb tells me that your amaryllises are quite happy where you have them :) They do sound lovely.
I received my first amaryllis from my parents for a wedding anniversary present back in the spring of 1987 or 1988, and it is just starting to bloom again :) We don't know what kind it is, but from pictures, we're thinking it might be Appleblossom. Since then, I've been given others, too, and that does make them extra special.
By the way, last fall while purchasing some bulbs, I read about some species tulips that are said to be able to grow in warmer areas like ours. Haven't tried them yet, but I'd like to some time.

Hi Michelle,
I have one red double and two that are red and white mingled, Dancing Clown, I think.
Ah, they sound pretty :)
The only double I have is Blossom Peacock. Thinking of adding more to my collection, though.

Beautiful!!! A friend recently shared with me one of her red ones. Before he passed away, her father had her come dig all his red amaryllis up to make sure someone in the family had them. They've multiplied over the years, so she's shared with all her family, and now us. I'm glad to know what to do with it, since it's already bloomed this year I think.
The leaves are very long and laying on the ground. Is it safe to assume that I will allow it to feed the bulb until the leaves start dying back, then cut those off?
Yes, I would leave them on there until they start dying. I would think you could plant and leave yours in the ground also. Mine have been in the ground for 3 years now and the last 2 winters have been record cold and they have been fine.
