A friend planted a dozen young fruit trees last fall in what used to be a Knotweed forest. We dug up as many roots as we could and roto tilled before planting. He covered everything with leaves to control winter erosion. Now the knotweed is sprouting everywhere.
I suggested grass seed and mow it every week when it gets established.
Any other suggestions?
A before pic.

Ground cover under new fruit trees?
Landscaping paper, or fabric, or both - not landscaping plastic - with mulch over the top. You can be cheap and recycle newspaper, you will need multiple layers, 8-10? or coragated cardboard.
