What is this loony loon doing?
He would swim a bit and then raise one foot and wave it around. Then he would swim some more and do it again. I watched a family for at least an hour and one of them (the male I think, only because it was the bigger of the two adults) kept doing this.

Not sure why they do, but it is fairly frequent behaviour for a lot of waterbirds. Maybe something to do with temperature regulation.

Thanks Resin! That sure sounds like a good reason. I don't think I've ever seen a bird do this before. I'll have to spend more time at the bay and watch birds. :O) Well, somebody's gotta do it.
