Picture window injuries

Mandeville, LA(Zone 8b)

Yesterday I had an Indigo Bunting hit one of my large picture windows. The tip of his beak was broken and he took a long time to recover. I have a lot of glass space overlooking my yard and I want to minimize the risk to my avian friends, but at the same time, have the viewing space to appreciate them. This is not a new problem. I had a few Goldfinch fatalities during the winter. Has anyone else had this problem? And what was you solution?

Hi gazer, I used to have a lot of window strikes too. Now I have these decals on the windows and they have made a huge difference.

I use the stickers too..they have helped. We still have an occasional hit but not near as many now.

I use the same ones. I have found that if birds are being chased, then the decals won't act as a deterrent, because they're flying in blind fear, but otherwise they're pretty good. I also like how they can be removed for window cleaning and re-attached without losing any integrity.

Thanks guys. I have seen decals before, but these are much more high tech. Any particular decal you used?

I use the hummingbird ones because they're the only ones I'll ever see here.

I think I have maple leaf and butterfly here.

I could really use the decals!
This poor guy left his outline on my window.
I'll try the decals to see if I can avoid another bird injury.

I use the window alert Hummingbirds.

We have a real problem too, we have several enterprising hawks that sit in the woods and watch our feeders until the small birds let their guard down. Then they swoop in and drive the birds (mostly doves) into the windows and they come and pick them up. Hardly any work on their part. I had a sparrow hawk hit the window and die a few years ago. A few weeks ago we had a stunned Cooper's Hawk sitting on the deck next to a dead dove. He almost died that time. I wish they would go after my voles instead.

We had a Pileated Woodpecker hit the window for the first time last week and I got some photos of it while it was getting its' bearing back. I will post one of them. He flew off a few minutes later.

I just had a Coopers Hawk take a Mourning Dove at the back of the yard. I would love to see Pileated!

Wow. I have problems with predator birds, also (Hawk, Owl). I must say that none of them drove smaller birds into the window to stun their prey. My suggestion is that if you have that problem, move your feeder farther from your house if possible. Also, locate you feeder underneath the canopy of a tree with a complex branch structure, which a bird of prey will find it difficult/impossible to fly through. My bird strike problems did not involve a predator chase (I don't think)
