Espicia Cleopatra

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

I want to buy Espicia " Cleopatra" but at $17.50 I hesitate a little because from what I remember it is hard to grow. Any suggestions/encouragement? What to do? Helene

Columbus, OH

I think I can help you out :)

(tish) near Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Its not hard to grow, it just grows slow and some need a little more pampering than others. There is a Canadian clone Cleopatra that is supposed to be a little easier to grow, not need so much humidity and warmth.

I would offer, but mine has but one stolen so far. I went to the AVSA convention last week and bought two more of the pink cream and white ones. Time will tell how they fair....Pink Satin and Pink Dreams.

If Celene can't help you out, let me know and I'll see if a member of our club has any extra --she had a couple to give out last month, don't know if they were Cleopatra or the Canadian clone one.

Trish thanks for thinking of me.
i must confess, loved the stuff you sent and all is doing well. However, the Kolaria had a bit of an accident upon arrival (I cut it in half when uinpacking). Now I have the corage to admit this because the top re-rooted well and is blooming, beautiful, and the bottoms is showing new growth. hewwww (wiping sweat of my brow)

Celene, i 'd love your help! Do you have some you can spare? I had company here in Fl. my kids were here and I couldn't use my office - computer- it became a BR. Please direct me.....

Bought 3 on the net. shipping in may. "Alice" RicRac" "Cotton Candy". Here they have the cleopatra $17.50 and the grower said exactly what tish said. needs humidity and warmth. Did not grow well this winter because of cold. The grower is in Ohio.
I used to grow pink panther, pink flowers. Got it at Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses, Lyndon was still alive then. Man what an operation. Helene

Who grows them in Ohio?? I'm in Ohio, and it's a little cold to ship this week...frost a couple of nights, they'll turn to mush. But I do have stolons, and mine is the Canadian clone.

The glass bowls are so easy. They love light too, at least at my house. You can see bowls on the bottom shelf.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Hey Sally,

What is your average distance between the tips of the A.V.s and the bottom of you lights? I know I have mine too close. Thanks!

I am not home right now, I am not sure. I keep the lights as far up as they go though. I can't rememeber the height. The lights are really good and when I first got them years ago, I was not told to be CAREFUL with new lighting, especially the kind I bought. I turned them on for 8 hours and they got too much light. They were not used to it. They LOVE it now, but I had to work up to that.

Thanks! I definately need to do some adjusting just not sure of the average distance. I also have to take into account the starter plants are sitting on top of my permanest trays.

Yes, you do have to experiment a bit.

Sally,
Are your Episcias planted in spagnum only....nothing else? Do you put perlite or stones in the bottom of tall jars?

Lynn

South, TX

Just spagnum moss. They LOVE it. Wet (damp really) spagnum. That is all. I think they have needed a couple of drops of water in several years! No fertilizer either. It works great for me. They grow like crazy.

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

Those garden fairies are very special. Many are retired it seems. Where to you purchase the glass cloches? Thanks Helene

South, TX

There are a lot of nice sites for the fairies. They photograph so WELL! SO detailed! Well made too.

The bowls and huge jars are from craft stores. Hobby Lobby and Micheal's. I made the tops with glass candle holders. The kind that look like a plate. Then I glued a tiny candle holder on top for a handle. I LOVE to look in the glass areas and candle areas with glass. I love tiny glass bowls too. I mix and match and it's fun.

It would have to wait until I feel better. I have been sick for a year. I think I am making progress. I think I got my plants here at Lydon Lyon. I checked and I don't see Cleopatra, but the do have Ember Lace and my other favs. It will just take time before I am up to mailing anything. This is also an early photo.

I drive to Stewart, Ohio to Glasshouse Works a couple of times a year. The owners are fantastic, very knowledgeable, interesting gentlemen. The gardens are to die for.

I am on MANY wonderful supplements for sure. I have had VERY good bloodtests. It is a very hard thing to treat. You just try to deal with the symptoms.
