I am growing chili peppers for the first time. Any one have suggestions on varieties for jalapeno, red chili or cayenne? Anyone know the expected yield per plant.
Also, I read that you can't plant chili peppers near green peppers (900') due to cross pollination. Anyone have expereince.
All advice appreciate. We are growing for the food bank here in Winston-Salem (www.foodbankgarden.blogspot.com).
Chili Peppers
Depends on your taste buds. Most of the Jalapeno that I have tried give abundant yields. I currently grow Ixtapa which is large and prolific, but I have had good results with Jalapeno M ( hotter than average), TAM Mild ( cooler than average) , Jalapeno ( average). http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=pepper%2C+jalapeno&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=with&Search=Search.
Long Slim is my favorite Cayenne. I have grown Tobasco as a substitute seasoning pepper.
I do not save seeds, so I interplant bells, frying peppers, jalapenos, and other types of hot peppers freely, no problems. I only put out 50 - 100 plants however.
