Seeds

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

The hib seeds I got from the plant across the street that the guy cut down are germinating. So far it looks like I've got 3 seeds starting to grow. Alot of the seeds had little holes in them and bugs, but after 2 weeks in the freezer, no more bugs. Anyway I scrattered some seeds in a pot and this morning I seeing sprouts.

Everybody keep your fingers crossed for me. This is my first attempt to start hibs from seeds.

Isn't it great? I grew my first one from seed about 5 years ago. When it got big enough to bloom, (ywo years later), I called it Pukin' Happy, since that's the way I felt that I had kept it alive that long!

I'm going to try and start some more. I have Texas red star and white star hibs. See how I do with them.

Two more seeds in the same pot as the first one are now breaking ground!!! So I guess some of those seeds are viable.

Super dooper, you're doing great.

I've got 3 more breaking ground. Didn't realize I had sprinkled that many seeds. Their in a 4 inch pot.
The first one is now almost 2 inches tall and starting to send out first leaves. Now what?

Took a really good look at my pot of seedlings and who there are actually 15 sprouting. I guess I need to start planning on where to put all of them. That is if they all make it.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Oh my!!! Look at all the seedlings! I figured some would not grow as alot of the seeds had holes in them from the bugs. But it seems like just about the whole pinch of seeds I put in the 4 in pot is sprouting. Now what? How soon should I try to repot them and into what size pots.

Sorry the picture isn't better. I'll try again tomorrow to get a clearer picture.

That is so fun to watch you have so much fun. I have hasd good luck with cuttings but nothing from seeds. I purchased 10+ plus new babies from Paradise and they are all putting on spring growth except one. It may just be late. Have fun and do not bust all your buttons because they are a pain to sew back on.

I'd just let them grow in a big tangle until they are about eight inches tall, so the bottoms of the stems have nice bark, and then dump them out into a bucket of water with plenty of Superthrive and jiggle and untangle their roots one at a time underwater and repot.

Molamola, Thanks for the information. I was worried about what to do with them. I'll keep everyone informed of how they are doing.

Yes, I had to think about that for a bit. I've done that with vegetable seeds all too often!! But then I didn't want to save every one of fifty tomato plants.

My next question. Most of my babies have started to put up permanent leaves, is it ok for me to start fertilizing them? How much should I use and how often?

Oh, good thing you asked. Hibiscus like Palm fertilizer best. They hate any kind of superbloom.

So should I start giving them some now? I had miracle grow, but can go get Palm Fertilizer while out tomorrow.

weakly, weekly

Great thanks.

All my seedlings are still growing well. Most have tiny permanent leaves now. I can hardly wait until I can put them in seperate pots and see them really take off.

I repotted 11 of my babies today. Ran out of small pots for the rest. Now I'll see if I can keep them going. Wish me luck!!!

My little seedlings are doing just great and putting up more leaves. Maybe they are going to make it. Of course, don't know waht I will do with 25 young hibiscus of the same. Maybe same color. Wonder if that hib across the street is a hybrid? It must be. Maybe I'll get something really interesting.
