cooling shade house.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Well I get the first fan with mister in the shade house. The temp. dropped from 93 to 73 in less than 5 minutes. I have a sensor out there that I can watch, it records 85 for the out side temp in the shade and right now it had gone back up to 74 in the shade/green house.

I have another of the fans that I might use out there later. Need to get the water timer connected and the timer for the fan.

Could you share the name of this system, and where you got it. Curious minds want to know.

Thank you sandy! I'm trying to figure out some kind of system to keep my orchids cool and humid when things get really hot and dry in late summer, without drowning them. That might work, and the price is reasonable. My Epis don't seem to suffer from the heat as much as the orchids do. They seem to have suffered more from the cold winter this year. I've got buds, but not nearly as many as usual, and they are very slow to open.

My shade house get up to 120 last year, cooked a few of my epis, so I need to cool it. I have one bud but I do not think it will make it. but I have had a lot of new growth. So I think they are happier.

I have a timer for the water that I will hook up soon(need batters and would you now it I do not have those, have everything else but no 9's) hope to have the water to go off soon enough that the water will evaporate off the epis before dark. also will set up a timer for the fan I have a second fan but I may use it on the carport.

Mine are out side , hanging from my lemon tree, so it never gets that hot, but we do get up to 104 from time to time. I think most plants can take the heat (and cold) if it is for a short time. It's when it continues they really suffer. We never got down to freezing this winter, but it stayed in the mid 30s to 40s at night for a couple of months. We're still getting cold nights, and have only had a few days that were over 70. It has really slowed the spring plants down. There are things blooming, but one or two at a time...no big shows. Oh well, summer will come eventually....

We have summer today. 90 degrees.

What kind of epis do you all have???

I have a zillion orchid cactus--well closer to 200, giver or take a few. Thanks to the squirrels knocking over the pots and losing a lot of labels and that good old Florida sun bleaching on a lot of labels I do not know which one is which and more. Now it is that darn dog getting in there and chasing some thing that is knocking the pots over.

Wow!! I have a few. One is the Night blooming Cereus my great grandmother had. It's about 30 years old. I have campfire. One that blooms pink. One unknown that I cut from one of the schools I work at. I love'em!! They are easy to take care of. My dirn cat knocked over my campfire and broke it in half, so now it's rooted and I guess I will have a new plant. Dirn cat!!! She's still a kitten. I have 3 and I have trained the other 2, but she's still a baby. She knows now not to mess with momma's plants. I have bunches of tropicals. My house is a jungle. I am running out of room. Considering a greenhouse now. Julie

My brother and I built mine out of PVC pipe and plastic corrugated sheets. Right now the roof , back , one side and part of the other have the sheets and the front is covered with shade cloth.

My problem is they get way to hot last year. Did not help that I was not about to get out there and water as often as they needed, hoping this year will be better.''

I live in KY so I can't do a shade house. It would only be used for several months and then everything would freeze. Unfortunately....... :( Julie

Well we get down to the low 20's for over a week, I had a double layer of plastic taped up across the front and 2 small heaters in side and there was only a tiny bit of cold damage.

With PVC pipe you can use screws to put on and take off the hard plastic sheets. So that's why i call mine the Shade/green house it is half and half.

Louisville, KY

Wow!!! Great!! I may consider that.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Use 2inch water grade(the thicker walked pipe) Here is a web site where you can find the joints and shade cloth http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/PVC-Fittings/products/1182/

If you have a Home Depot near by they should have the heavy corrugated plastic sheets, get green of if like me need to spend less get the clear one and a couple of cans of white plastic paint.

Thanks for your help!!! Julie

You are welcome.

up date. the fan and mister works great but would work much better in a larger green house.

My plants are looking a lot better but some are getting a tiny bit to much water. Moved them around so the ones in poorer shape will get more water. Looks like I lost less than 20 to the extreme heat out there last summer.

Going to keep the fan and get more small fans plus get a mister that can be put along the center roof pipe so the water comes down and the fans can blow it all over.

Now have a water timer so the water comes on around 11 and goes off right now about 3-4 so the plants have a chance to dry off before night time.
