I thought sexlinks didn`t go broody?

Bridgewater, ME

This is my two years old black sexlink, she is definitly broody, she won`t get out of the box and she growls at you when you get near her.We have been taking her out of the box and puting her outdoor and closing the coop up hoping she would get over it but as soon as she get back in she is in the box again. The others push her around and lay there eggs and she takes them and puts them under herself. So today I said to dh well if she wants babies I will put fake eggs under her and put her in a cage(the box she was in is high up and if she did hatch babies they would fall to there death)so thats what we did,she had a fit would not lay on the eggs upset her water and food pacing back and forth and sreeching, then did the broody stinky poo and had to leave the coop it was so bad.So I took her out and put her outside again thinking that all that had just happened to her was to tramatic and she would foget about the boody thing,NOWAY as soon as I opened the coop up cause it was going to rain, back up in the high nesting box she went again and in I went again put her back in the cage, she will stay there for a few days when she can`t be outside with the coop closed up.Worked hard the last two days and got the big and little coops cleaned out and new bedding down, windows washed walls vacumed.Glad for the shavings with the poo in it for my gardens. Was thinking if broody would have stayed in cage when my four orpington chicks come the 3rd of May I was going to try slipping them under her and see if she would have accepted them as her own.

I have a Golden Sebright (which are famous for not being broody) who is very broody. I think any individual chicken may go broody, it is just that some breeds are much less likely to.

Sex-links, being a cross of two distinct breeds, may take after the more broody of the two, I suppose. Here is someone else who has had a similar experience:

I have a Buff Orpington who is often broody. At the moment she s being joined by a Jersey Giant. They are BIG girls. They both crowd into a milk crate nest box!

I have five buff Minorcas, They don't go broody, and they hate people. I bought the five just to try them. I hate them and would never advise anyone to buy them. Two of them are broody, and they hate me. When I go in to collect the eggs I got so tired of them flying out of the nest at me, now I lift the lid and hit they with my baseball cap. They fly out and I take their eggs. I have never had a chicken I hated, but I do now. Every day I hope that a predator will get them. When you walk into the coop they act like your going to kill them and they upset the whole coop. As soon as my australorps mature and my cherryeggers mature I will butcher the Minorcas. Right now I need their eggs...Hay.

WHAT IS GOING ON I HAVE ANOTHER BLACK SEX-LINK THAT IS BROODY!!I was feeling under her to see if there was any eggs and she is bald on her belly, why is her feathers missing on her belly the rest of her looks fine.

Some will pull their feathers to create more heat for the babies, skin on skin. I'm just no darn good. I love it when I can share my misery...I will trade you my minorcas for your sexlinks Green. Going broody is bad enough but when the hens hate you, it's just time for revenge. I hate them just as much...trade anybody???...Hey ZZ's want some minorcas?...LOL

ZZ's Your not going to believe this but I have three of Dot's babies, two hens and a rooster, and get this all three have feathers on their feet. I have never had any feather footed birds except three white cochins about five years ago. I don't like them and have stayed away from feathered feet. How can that be??? Honestly! I am beside myself as to how all of a sudden I have gotten three feather footed seramas. Could it be from a mix of some kind way back. None of the original had a feather one. I don't get it. I'd like your thoughts on it. Hay The roo is tiny just like Dot.

Sorry Green for stealing your thread, Hay.
