Dutch Iris - Bloom Time

Valdese, NC(Zone 7a)

I planted a mix of Dutch Irises (mahogany, purple, blue) this past fall. Will they bloom this spring? They have had foliage up for awhile, but I haven't seen any obvious bloom stalks.

I hope that they bloom! Are they usually a very late spring/early summer bloomer?

They are supposed to be planted in the fall so they should bloom in the spring. Not sure when though.

I've been wondering the same thing. I planted what seems to be the same in mid November as per the package instructions for my general zone. They came out of the soil early I thought, then the leaves browned on the tips. They continue to get taller but no blooms. Package does say "late spring" That could mean another month?

The same is true of a Bearded Iris in the background of this pic

Okay, I see that some of mine have blooms coming up on them. I didn't check all of them just the iris where I was working at. They must just be late or maybe this is the norm for my area? Who knows what factors....At least they are going to bloom.

kdfisher, your pic of the Dutch iris is what mine looked like. I would bet that in the near future you will be able to see a change where blooms and stalks are coming out. Your Tall Bearded Iris may not bloom this year if it was a first year planting. Or it may not be its time yet. They have very-early, early, middle, late, very-late bloom classifications depending on which specific TB iris you have. My early TB have bloomed/are blooming, and others all have stalks. If yours doesn't have a stalk up yet it may not bloom this year. Or it may just be late. I love TB iris.

Floweraddict,

Mine always send up leaves in the fall - that is normal for dutch iris - and mine are in bloom now. You are a half-zone behind me so it sounds like yours are coming up at normal time since you see bloomstalks. you'll LOVE them! Mine come back every year.

kd, yours should be blooming at any time as well. Remember the first year after planting is not always an accurate indicator of when they'll bloom, but subsequent years should be pretty consistent barring any crazy weather that might speed them up or slow them down. Mine normally start to bloom around April1, though this year were about a week late.
