last spring a friends house I saw an orange Clivia or Kaffir lilly and OMG it was BEAUTIFUL.. I actually thought it was fake it was so perfect.. yesterday Lowes in Nac had 75% off a ton of stuff and I found a Clivia in yellow called Golden Dragon marked down(.I got a huge bleeding heart for 2 .00 too).... its already bloomed of course but I can wait till next year to see it bloom because of what I saved on the price..lol.. I checked out plant files and I know Ill have to bring it inside during teh winter but I want to know what if any experiences any of you have had with it..and if you have any tips of what I might do to help it along..Ive been wanting since seeing Karens and finally found one at a price I could afford..
any one have a Clivia lily??
I got one as a bonus in a trade last Fall and did not know what it was but Maggi was very happy, then I have seen several threads here and there about them. They look to be a plant worth bringing in and out. I will be checking back on this thread to learn more.
You have a real "find." Our garden club sold them, in bloom, for $40. at the botanical garden show last month. There's probably seeds on what's left of the bloom too.
the bloom was cut off ,darn it.. I was going to add soil to the pot but wont now that I know the bulb needs to be exposed.. theres 1 plant that has about 10 leaves than a smaller on with about 5 in the same pot.. I will be haulling this one inside for the winter cause I sure dont want to lose it.. my friends tell me if theres a bargin nearby, I can usually find it...lol..
I am a recovering Cliviaoholic. At one time I had over forty different varieties. The basics for successful clivia culture are pretty simple and most damage is done by over loving them. They thrive on neglect. The reason it seems they like to be root bound is because they can't take too much water, it rots their roots. So they don't have to be pot bound if you don't water them very often much. They can't take much direct sun. Dappled shade is great.
To get the best blooms from them they like a cool dry dormant period. What I do is when temperatures are averaging around the 50s (around mid october here) I put my clivia under an overhang on my porch so they don't get rained on. I bring them in the garage if temperatures drop in the thirties. Keep them cool and dry for about 8-10 weeks then they should bloom wonderfully.
thank you .. I have it under dapple shade right now and Ill make sure not to kill it with kindness.. Ive learned that many plants do better if you ignore them..lol. its in a 10 in pot right now with some of the root system showing.. Like I mentiond it has 2 sets of leaves on it so Im not going to do anything to it.. what about fertiziling?? it any thing special I should do..??
I use orchid fertilizer something like a 20-20-20. At 1/2 strength. And i cut back from that when its real hot. Check out this site it has usefull information

Thanks.. hopefully Ill have some success with it next year!
Ok the fertilizer I use is "Grow More" urea free 20-10-20. Many Clovis growers swear by it.
thanks again!!!
